I don't confess to knowing much about Matt Burke, but I love the idea of hiring in house, creating a consistency and a lack of interruption to the offseason.

It feels for once Gases is building something for the long term as opposed to previous regimes clinging onto '1 more year', with forced staff changes or big free agent signings.

With one of the youngest rosters in NFL and the experience they would have gained over last year, I really feel we are heading in right direction.

I know it's easy to jump on bandwagon, but I hope this consistent in house hiring runs through whole regime.

This is one area that does not require consistency. The defense needs to be shaken up and retooled.

No offense to Burke, but we need a DC that doesn't need OTJ training. He might be a great a great DC, but I would rather go with experience and track record.

OP thread is misleading. Don't see anywhere that this has been official at this point in time

I don't know much about Matt Burke, but it is interesting that the moment speculation surfaced about Vance Joseph's possible exit to Denver, the media has presented Burke as the probable replacement (without being hosed down by a Dolphin spokesman). Adam Gase spoke about the importance of keeping continuity within the organization.
This is a Gase decision and an important one, but it seems like his immediate reaction is to promote the guy he knows from within the Defensive staff rather than consider other well qualified people who are available in the market.
Also interesting to note that Burke is Dartmouth educated, so he's probably pretty smart. We know that Gase is really smart and he's made some great calls in his rookie coaching season. My immediate reaction is to be supportive of Coach Gase's call, if he wants Burke to be his right hand man as Defensive Coordinator.

By promoting our own LB coach to D.C. He will be intimately familiar with the scheme and the personal he has to work with. I have no doubt that they intend to give him the resources to fill in the blanks. Especially linebackers.

Even more impressive Spike than the University of Adelaide?

I really don't care about the OJT Burke will need if we promote from within. Yes, there are names like Wade Phillips out there, but how many times do you see teams like Pitt and NE promote from within, spurning the chance to go with a big name, outside hire?

Gase practically said that he had zero input with the defense all year when discussing Joseph's leaving. He preferred to give most of if not all his attention to the offense. Don't know how I feel about that situation. Seems to me that the head guy should at least dabble in the defense.Assuming that's the case, would hiring an in house guy be good or bad. I guess it would allow Gase to stay hands off again. But if we brought in an experienced DC like Mike Smith or Gus Bradley, would they need more or less of Gase's attention since they have the experience just not used to this situation. Bottom line is that I hope Gase decides to be more involved in the defense in 2017. That unit pretty much stunk and maybe Gase could have lent some ideas to get it better, no?

Nice sentiments but if there's a small glimmer of hope. you pursue Wade Phillips with a vengeance cuz there's no comparison. And didn't Bradley win a SB? There are some stud DCs out there that I think this team should do its due diligence in exploring and pursuing.

At first I was concerned because he is the LB coach and they sucked, but after thinking about it more I concluded that the LB was actually worse talent-wise than they played overall. If Gase has confidence on him then I guess maybe they should give him a shot. I for sure dont want some old dinosaur DC thats on his last legs.
