ok...nothin to it but to get to it...i'll preface this by saying i didn't do an every snap count or an every snap breakdown...quite frankly cause there's too many damn snaps to do that with...but i did take notes on things i saw and some specific plays that stood out for the good and the bad...he primarily was lined up over eric norwood an undersized and i mean undersized for a 4-3 end guy who lacks strength and power but possesses pretty decent edge rush speed...ideally a guy who's a situational pass rusher in my book...just lacks too much bulk and will probably wear a target in the run game if he's an every down 4-3 end...i know i'd attack him with the run...anyways this is again only the first half of the panthers game...

i counted 4 different attempts to cut a guy and in all 4 he was unable to get the guy to the ground...most the time the guys would just step over him when he was under their legs and put their hands on his back to maintain balance once he was on the ground...

gets a hands to the face penalty when he's beaten by an edge speed rush where norwood beats him to the corner i can't tell if his feet seem to stop moving after a certain point or he's trying to reach too much with his arms and getting beat but anyways he realizes he's beat and the hands go up into the face mask and helmet of norwoods...definitely a negative play...

running play moves the dt 3 yards off the ball and out of the hole reggie bush cuts up behind move out blocks by pouncey first and then him for a big 17 yard gain...

gets one snap and i mean only one snap the entire half against a highly rated edge rusher in de charles johnson and johnson walks him back with the power bull rush like he's on skates and it results in a holding penalty on murtha...ugly stuff there...struggled with strength big time

gets walked back another time against 91 i believe but just before he's into henne he's able to sit down and anchor and lock his arms and holds the line...

on goalline my notes say in a 4 point stance he's unable to create anything...

out a series for garner who i have to say for first time reps at left tackle looks pretty solid...

comes down inside on a run play where he's clean into the second level and he's got a lb in his sites and should just decleat the guy but he dives and makes marginal contact...he's on the ground the lb doesn't get in on the play but should have been blown up...

false start murtha...3 penalties now in the half

i think off what i'm seeing his initial kick slide in pass pro looks pretty good the feet look ok but i think i see a guy who when he faces explosive first step edge rush burst and guys who can dip and bend around the corner he's gonna struggle in pass pro...i think i'm gonna see a lot of reaching with his arms because it seems to me that his technique suffers when faced with speed and he tries to compensate by reaching with his arms..i think the footwork slows down as well....he sits down pretty well can't say he looked to upright or didn't have sufficient knee bend all that much but there's something concerning about him against explosive edge guys...and of course if he gets beat a few times he's gonna start trying to cheat and overextending and then guys are gonna give him the outside first step and then rip inside and they're gonna have free runs at the qb...or wait for him to overextend and then break out the power bull rush and likely put him on his back

i do like though that he seems to have strong hands and when he locks out and grabs hold of a guy he's not going anywhere...guys stayed blocked when he was in front of them...

i'd like to see better contact when he's got free runs at guys in the run game...

bottom line is if this guys playing left tackle for us in games that matter due to jake long being out for whatever reason i think we better give him a lot of help...chip with the rbs roll the protection to his side etc...

i don't know...garner struggled big time with the falcons 4-3 backup end lawrence sidbury in the preseason opener...but i think sidburys tools are pretty damn high end

i wanna say that was at right tackle in that game if i recall correctly...matt moore was running for his life cause of sidbury

i think i would probably start with murtha on the right side but i'd have garner over there with his helmet on...i'm pretty damn certain colombos gonna struggle big time maybe not week 1 cause new englands more about scheming their edge pass rush than actual high end talent...

Hoops - out of Murtha, Colombo, and Garner, do you see anyone capable of holding down RT? Will these guys be able to do as well as Carey (who was quite bad at RT last season)? Or is the wiser plan to move Carey back to RT and try to fill RG?

just my opinion...but if its me i sign ohara and see what he looks like...if he can man the center i make him my starting center move pouncey to left guard incog to right guard and carey back to right tackle to start...if carey struggles big time i think i pull him out of the lineup for one of my swing guys either murtha or garner...i don't like colombo starting at right tackle...and i can't stomach watching incognito pull at left guard...so i make a move there asap

i don't know...its all tough...if you've watched this panthers tape a few times you know that defense up front is pretty damn bad...i know we moved them off the ball but we're gonna face a lot of much more talented fronts than we did last week...charles johnsons the only guy i would be happy with starting on my dline and i think even he's somewhat overrated...

I agree with you on O'Hara - I don't see why they don't move on that. Although it's more musical chairs, it seems to fix several problems - namely, slow-as-molasses Incognito and at least puts Carey back to his spot, which right now seems better than some of the guys we're trying at RT. But I don't think it's ENOUGH of a difference with this configuration to eat crow and say you drafted a guard at #15.

I'd like to think they're waiting on O'Hara to see how RT shakes out, as we're suggesting, but I don't think that's the case. I think they'd move to the O'Hara plan only if Pouncey was disappointing at center, mentally or physically, which he isn't.

Worst case scenario, O'Hara could teach Pouncey how to play center at a high level.

i always thought ohara with the giants was a damn good player...barring injury he'd be in my camp i know that...i don't know what they're thinking...just like i didn't know what the thought process was when they signed colombo...or made incognito the primary lead move player at left guard...beats the hell out of me

this week we get another 4-3 front probably not as bad as the panthers one but with some somewhat underachieving guys up front so its another hard game to get a read on just how solid this oline is...one things for sure this week...the bucs will be hungry after that whoopin they took from new england...there should be plenty of motivation on their part

i disagree with the Musical chairs... Incognito is fine... get over yourself..... we have more pressing matters like the right side!!!! Don't think colombo will have a prob run blocking its pass prot im worried about!!!!

Nice write up as usual. So basically whether it be Murtha or Columbo at RT for us the football guys on the site are not comfortable with it.

What do you mean football guys ? Are some of us fans of the Miami Dolphins checkers team or something? Don't we all like football, or else why would we be here?

Sorry to offend anyone, let me re-phrase this. So baiscally the guys who take the time to break down individual player performances and post about it on the site aren't comfortable with Murtha or Columbo at RT?

There have been many posts over the past week about how Murtha should replace Columbo becuase Columbo sucks, end of story. I'm curious to see what actually breaking the guys down reveals.
