Hi guys, Giants fan here. Just wanted some information on Sam Madison. Was he released just because of his high cap number, declining skills, both? I haven't seen many Dolphins games and was wondering if someone could tell me about his play. The Giants are in discussions now with him and may end up signing him. Thanks!

Lost a step, high cap figure and didnt fit with Saban's Scheme. Alot of us are bummed about it. Whoever signs him will have a servicable CB on their team.

Better suited for man coverage. Has 2 years left. 3 tops. if you sign him, you should be happy

He was released because of a combination of his declining skills and his cap number.

Basically, he's not that great anymore. He's solid in coverage. He's not going to make many interceptions anymore, as he's lost the recovery to gamble. He has become a liability against the run, too.

My humble opinion, but basically, he was cut because:

-His skills are declining overall
-He had a huge cap number and - well, not sure if you've heard this - but there's some kind of CBA labor issue going on right now and teams may need to scramble to get under the cap,

He's been awesome for us, but he's been beaten more repeatedly the past couple years. That said, he picked up his play quite a bit the last 6-8 games this season after starting out horribly. And - while not the almost-shut-down-corner he used to be - he's still pretty good for the right price. You could do a lot worse than Sam Madison!!

I hope somehow we bring him back, but if not, he may make a good Giant.

Madison was a popular player here that was starting to decline. One of his biggest gaps was tackling ability, but I think actually he looked pretty good at that for maybe the second half of last season.

Good player. I agree with the above assessment, you have a pretty solid CB for probaby 2, maybe 3 years there.

Madison won't last 3 seconds in NYC! The NY media will eat him alive.

First time he gets an untimley personal foul penalty for something stupid, the NY media will be on his butt for a week!!! The Miami media gives him a free pass he won't get that in NY and Sam will crack under the pressure.

Add in his age, and it's all three....

Good luck with him. I appreciate what Madison did for the Phinz over the years, but it was painfully obvious that he was no longer able to play at his former all pro level. He's been a yearly disappointment lately....

PHINZ RULE!!!

ooooohhh, the big bad NY media........big misconception. Same as anywhere else IMO. If Manning and Pennington, two of the biggest nancies I've ever seen can survive the "dreaded" NY media, then anyone can.

I think that he would be a good fit there because they have Strahan and Umenyiora (sp?) to get great pressue and Sam can get up tight in man coverage and press. that's when he's at his best......but as others stated, just don't expect too much in the way of run support.

Sam will show flashes of brilliance with stretches of horrible play. I liked him for years but was rather disappointed in his play the last two or three seasons. If you sign him prepare yourself for a few great plays and some major rage as he gets burned time and again.

Manning and Pennington don't say stupid things and while maybe they don't always perform on the field they don't do stupid things on the field (like spit on other players or get stupid 15 yard personal foul penalties at the wrong time, like Madison has a history of).

The NY media is big and bad and someone like Sam won't last!

It will be weird seeing Madison in another team's jersey but he's lost a step. Last year, I was getting tired of seeing him run after a player who just burned him. He was also questionable, at best, against the run. He looked scared to hit most RB's.

I liked him and Surtain but I really don't feel that he's worth as much money as he'll demand. He'll get a good contract and be a decent CB for 1-2 more years but he'll get burned at a critical time in the game if a QB/WR go after him.

....and yeah, I'm afraid that you guys are right...the NY media will tear him up.

:dolphins:

Even though Sam has lost a step and is getting older, he is 50 Times better than what the Giants have at CB.

You should be happy for a few years

Dont listen to anyone who tells you he cant play

Has he lost a step over the years? Of course every older player does, but he more than makes up for it in leadership and on the field awareness, he can still cover anyone man to man and make plays

One of the greatest defensive players to ever wear a dolphins uniform

I agree..

His strongest strength is breaking off his man, and then breaking up a pass on a guy he wasn't even covering. He see's the field really well. In our system it is required that your CB's are good tacklers. This is Sam's biggest problem.

He's still quick, and works well in man coverage...Especially Bump and Run.
