Not sure if this has been discussed or not, but I wanted to look at the players who enter a make or break year.
1. John Beck -- it's kind of hard to put a quarterback going into his second season, with just four starts under his belt, into the make it now category. But since he came into the league at 25 years old and since the current regime drafted Chad Henne, Beck needs to seize the moment now. If he falls into the backup role this year, Henne has a huge edge going into 2009. Personally, I think Beck will make it. His arm strength is better than advertised, his work ethic is unreal, he's smart, he can move in the pocket. Physically, he doesn't look like he can take a beating so that could work against him.
2. Derek Hagan - there have been a few moments when I said "whoa who is that" as Derek Hagan made a catch. On those few occasions he's reminded me a little bit of Terrell Owens, but that is always tempered with the drops. To me Hagan is close to out of the league if he doesn't get considerably more consistent. No question the talent is there, though.
3. Matt Roth -- two years ago Roth looked like an up and comer. Last year he regressed under a different coaching staff. Hopefully, he will rebound with the new regime which is probably a lot closer in philosophy/style to Nick Saban than Cam Cameron. Roth just doesn't seem like a fit in this defense size-wise, but production can take care of size limitations. Roth will play in this league, but he really has to make the most of his opportunities this year to continue to start for Miami.
4. Jason Allen -- like Hagan, he has looked good in spots. Even great at times. Last year it looked like the light went on for awhile, but the consistency was just never there. I don't think the current coaching staff will put up with too many missed assignments.
