Not sure if this has been discussed or not, but I wanted to look at the players who enter a make or break year.

1. John Beck -- it's kind of hard to put a quarterback going into his second season, with just four starts under his belt, into the make it now category. But since he came into the league at 25 years old and since the current regime drafted Chad Henne, Beck needs to seize the moment now. If he falls into the backup role this year, Henne has a huge edge going into 2009. Personally, I think Beck will make it. His arm strength is better than advertised, his work ethic is unreal, he's smart, he can move in the pocket. Physically, he doesn't look like he can take a beating so that could work against him.

2. Derek Hagan - there have been a few moments when I said "whoa who is that" as Derek Hagan made a catch. On those few occasions he's reminded me a little bit of Terrell Owens, but that is always tempered with the drops. To me Hagan is close to out of the league if he doesn't get considerably more consistent. No question the talent is there, though.

3. Matt Roth -- two years ago Roth looked like an up and comer. Last year he regressed under a different coaching staff. Hopefully, he will rebound with the new regime which is probably a lot closer in philosophy/style to Nick Saban than Cam Cameron. Roth just doesn't seem like a fit in this defense size-wise, but production can take care of size limitations. Roth will play in this league, but he really has to make the most of his opportunities this year to continue to start for Miami.

4. Jason Allen -- like Hagan, he has looked good in spots. Even great at times. Last year it looked like the light went on for awhile, but the consistency was just never there. I don't think the current coaching staff will put up with too many missed assignments.

Good list. But IMO, Roth has already "broken" with the drafting of Merling and Langford, and the signing of Starks.

I would add Channing to the list.

travis danials, channing crowder?,

Yeah, I can see that. To me Daniels is really a depth guy, a decent backup but not starter material. Crowder is definitely a guy that I think is overrated on this board. You are right, it is a big year for him.

Well, first of all, I have to question those measurables. I dont think Roth is 285, and I am pretty sure Langford is closer to 290.

As for Merling, IMO, his position in this defense is still in question.

And who said size is Roth's only issue? How about short arms? Or a lack of pass rush? Not saying he will be cut, just saying the organization has a ton of 'their guys' in place that seem to be his eventual (or current) replacement.

Roth is 6'4" 285, Merling is 6'4" 276 and Langford is 6'6" 287. If Roth is too small then Merling and Langford are too

Merling's in the 280's and is naturally a capable 3-4 end. Roth has bulked up but that is not his natural frame. He is not a prototypical 4-3 tackle/3-4 end.

i hate this "Their guys" thing
These are all football players. Either they can play or they can't. If they are skilled enough as a football player you will find a way to integrate them into the system.

Matt Roth weighed almost 290 last year during training camp. He's NOT the 272 that he's listed on the official roster. That 272 was what he weighed 4 years ago when he was drafted.

Seriously that crap is getting of my nerves, "he is not a parcells guy" its very annoying.

i think beck is going to have to do something special to "make it" this season. the other options that we have dont give him a very big window to make a good impression. I can honestly see mccown starting the first 5 - then beck going in for 2-3 and if he doesnt look red-hot henne gets the nod to finish the season. IMO

I agree with Roth and Hagan.....dont agree so much with Beck and Allen. Allen actually played pretty well in given spots last year. And if we actually determine what position Allen will play and not keep moving him back and forth,he will be fine. I am in the minority in thinking Hagan will have a good year. Roth has T-Rex arms and is a terrible run defender. Beck...well I dont know.

That's as accurate and annoying as BP has never drafted a OT with a first round pick so therefore it must be some sort of law. How does anyone know on this board who BP wants or doesn't want.
