Would any of you be opposed to offering him a decent paying contract to try to steal him away from the Patriots or to make them pay more to sign him? He seems like a #1 corner whose overall game is sound.

According to Ben Volin of the Boston Globe, restricted free agent Malcolm Butler "won't be going anywhere."
The Patriots are fully expected to place a first-round tender on Butler. That would pay him around $4 million, a significant raise from the $600,000 Butler made in 2016. Teams can still try to sign Butler, but it would cost them a first-round pick and the Patriots could match all offers.

Is he not worth a 1st round pick? His addition would shore up our DB situation. Butler #1, Maxwell #2, and Howard as nickel.

NO. He is not worth a first round pick for the Patriots. We have far more pressing positions to fill other than our CB's. Personally, I am optimistic with Howard and Lippett and the return of Jones.

Don't all contracts have to be approved by the league office any more. To make sure there are no poison pills in them, after the pats and Vikings abused the practice.

That is debatable, but probably not for us because we have so many other needs and we need our draft picks. You have to hit on your draft picks because you basically get them on the cheap for the first 3-5 years. If you keep signing big players and lose draft picks doing it, you are burning the candle at both ends. You are paying a guy a lot of money to play a position and you are not filling a void because you lost that draft pick, meaning you will probably have to sign others in FA where you usually always spend more than your draft picks.

Howard is not a good option at nickle. Better to stick with McCain there than go with Howard or Lippett as slot corners.

Xavien Howard is not a nickel. He has bigger upside than Maxwell but he's not a nickel. Need faster, shiftier player for that role. Xavien is better against the bigger physical WRs.

You only trade inside the division when you're trading over the hill players (see mcnabb from philly to Washington) and even so you still make them over pay.

No he's not worth it when you look at at the rest of our defense (and/or team) whereas cb is manageable and we can look for depth in free agency or day 3 of the draft

Instead of losing a 1st giving Butler a huge deal why wouldn't Miami just pay AJ Bouye and keep their picks?

Malcolm Butler is good, but he's not getting away from New England. I wouldn't give up a 1st for him regardless, especially when he also needs to be paid.

Xavien Howard is one of our young studs. He is in a very elite group of future stars for the Dolphins. The only other young players I'd say are in that group are Ajayi, Parker and Tunsil. Yeah, he really is that good. But like Ajayi and Parker, I feel like I'm beating a dead horse preaching about how they're extremely talented and it's a pretty good bet that they'll become elite players.

Most of the board was infatuated with Lamar Miller and when I'd say these things about Ajayi there were a lot of people who simply dismissed him and my opinion. Many people were ready to label Parker a bust mid-way through his rookie season. Ajayi has justified my faith. Parker has shown flashes, and Howard has shown flashes. When he's healthy, we're going to see an elite CB who is dominant in coverage and excellent in run support.

Howard is an elite boundary CB who can play press or off coverage, but is ideally suited for press. Not really a nickel CB. He is very young (came into the league early), picked up the off concepts quickly, and really improved his approach to defend without drawing flags. For how few games he's played, I've been very impressed with his work ethic and how quickly he has picked up so much. He soaked up VJ's tutelage like a sponge, and is poised to really make a major break-through this year.
