Mando: Dolphins are rebuilding

It's a 6-10 team that fired it's coach and staff. They are going with a new offense that requires different personnel and philosophy. The defense will be somewhat changed as well. They may not be starting from scratch, but some rebuilding has to happen.

Bell might still come back, plus it isn't like they cut a strong safety in the prime of his career. Bell is 34 years old and was showing major signs of decline last season. There is a reason why they have drafted guys like Clemons and Jones in the last few years and added Richard Marshall in free agency.

Pass rush is a concern after Jason Taylor retired. You have to think though that they will add at least one pass rusher this upcoming draft. No they aren't going to walk in and have 6+ sacks as a rookie, but they will probably help take the needed pressure off of Wake. You can ALWAYS improve every position on your team, but the defense is still likely a top 10 unit for this upcoming season.

The defense was in shambles after the 2009 season and they were able to quickly rebuild it into one of the leagues top defenses. Maybe they are not as strong as the 2010 defense now, but they are not far from that status. Now it is the offense's chance to get rebuilt. Odds are against a quick turnaround like the defense had, but a turnaround doesn't need to take 2-3 years.

Running back is pretty much set with Bush(1,000+ yards last season), Thomas(hurt for most of last year, but was dominate Big 12 rusher), Messam(1,000+ yard back in the CFL) and Slaton(a former 1,000 yard NFL back). This group does come with some concerns, but does have tremendous potential. Could be the best running back unit in the AFC East.

The offense line from left to center is set with our 4 time Pro Bowl left tackle Jake Long. Richie Incognito has played well at left guard, and Mike Pouncey did very well as a rookie and should only be better in his second year. Right guard and right tackle are question marks right now, but there is certainly candidates on the roster. Murtha seems in line to start at RT and has shown glimpses the last couple of years. At right guard, you have to think you can get a solid starter out of the group of Garner, Jerry, Hicks and possible Scott(if signed).

Tight End position needs to be addressed, but is not in terrible shape. Fasano is OK, and Clay(who also is the fullback) came on late as a rookie.

This draft they need to draft their quarterback of the future, add probably at least two WRs and a pass rusher. Then the rest of the picks can be focused on players like a tight end, offensive lineman, and the safety position.

Sans Brandon Marshall, the offense is not all that different then the offense from last season. They same offense that was blowing out teams late in the season.

Very well put. The D is not in shambles and we are definitely not far from having a good team. We haven't even hit the draft.......there is still so much to happen before this team is finalized and I think we are all just so frustrated from the disappointment of the Manning/Flynn situation.
The biggest truth in Nubs whole post was that our RB corps is very solid and will NOT be an issue at all this upcoming season. Some good solid QB play and we will be solid competition for any team we play. Our backfield won't be able to be contended with so easily.

Our defense is good and will be improved with an added pass rusher.

Other then Long and Pouncey, Denny, our Kick and punter we are a whole offense away from a Super Bowl Run. If phins were not rebuilding then fans would not be complaining. Thats the first sign.

Offense just needs: QB, WR, TE, RT, someone to replace Bush after he leaves to FA next year; a good starting RG that is signed long term. Other then that we are not rebuilding.

I don't see much evidence of the Dolphins rebuilding under Jeff Ireland. When has he ever taken a long term view ?

If you want to see what a rebuilding team looks like then look at the Colts. They'll be lucky to win 4 games this year. And yet I'd much rather be in their situation than ours
