What a frustrating article. I am happy that Mando points out that it was a group decision to select Martin AND that all involved should take the heat if in fact the pick fails.

Also, frustrating is that Gordy Glenn has been outstanding for Coach Marrone. It says two things...Miami just missed on a much better player. Secondly, Buffalo is doing a much a better job developing players.

The lack of development of Miami's young players is startling and franchise killing.

No shiz....only two position coaches can develop guys on the entire staff....

Kacy Rodgers (DL) and Dan Campbell (TE) and guess what....those are two coaches that were already on staff when Philbin took the job.

Tony's staff was better than Joe's current group.

People blame Ireland for all the failings of draft picks, but people fail to realize he does this in concert with the coaches. They have plenty of input into the players selected. That doesn't absolve Ireland, because it is obvious he has failed to build a winning team, but people supporting Philbin should be aware that he had a large role in the selection of the busts the past 2 years, especially in offense.

Also, as others mentioned, the coaches seem incapable of developing any of these players

When a pick fails people immediately blame the GM and scouts. Fair enough, but why don't people ever blame the coaches for not developing the player and putting him a position to succeed? This staff asks players to do things they are not capable of way too much...Daniel Thomas stretch plays, pulling John Jerry, running Miller inside, Jimmy Wilson or LB's vs. a team's #1 receiver, Mike Wallace being used a possession receiver etc.

My biggest problem/concern with the article......Why the **** is Steven Ross giving ANY input on draft picks?!

Coyle's whole career is one of developing talent. He's good at it.

Aww, how cute. Mando is sticking up for Ireland.

And Martin probably was all of what the scout said till the likes of Pouncey and Incognito harassed him for 18 months and broke him.

You maybe right, I don't put a lot of stock in you missed on this pick so you're fired....Ireland does an adequate job on drafting players, they are good guys, hard workers and had success in college...it's up to the coaching staff and the player to take it to the next level........we don't know what's going on in the heads of these draft picks that may keep him from succeeding ( sick family member, unwanted pregnancy, marital issues etc..) I think Ireland needs to go because he has made the playoffs once since his arrival and that one the Tuna was running the show, throw in the gaffs, is your mother a whore and the Mess in Miami he's dead man walking....

I disagree. Have you not seen what Brian Hartline and Rishard Matthews have done under this staff? And to a lesser extent, Brandon Gibson? Who is the receivers coach, Ken O'Keefe? he is doing a good job.

How about our secondary coach? Dimitri Patterson is playing out of his mind when he's healthy. Nolan Carroll actually looks like a decent third corner.

I think the failures in coaching on the Dolphins staff right now are in game strategy (Joe Philbin) and offensive play selection (Mike Sherman). Mike Wallace was having great success in bunch formation or when put in motion. Why did we stop doing that after just 1-2 games?

Just another example of our front office's poor performance. The scouts need to go just as much as Ireland and if the front office goes then Philbin will most likely follow

By consensus, you mean a consensus of Bill Parcells making the decision with input from Bill Parcells and with the approval of Bill Parcells, correct?

Philbin has no experience as a scout. None. If Philbin wants to draft bad players, its on Ireland to tell him to shut up. Its his front office. The most damning part of the article is:

Two players were at the top of general manager Jeff Ireland's horizontal draft board at the position and both were graded as virtual equals.

The Dolphins, with the 42nd overall selection, liked Georgia offensive tackle Cordy Glenn and Stanford offensive tackle Jonathan Martin.

Thats where the problem lies. Sure, no one objected to the pick. Because the prospects were suppose to be equal. Ireland was the one that decided they were going to be equally as good. So yeah, when they are making their decisions based directly on Jeff Ireland's evaluations, and those evaluations prove wrong, then the blame falls on the guy making those evaluations.

Its not a conspiracy that in a league full of exceptional coaches basically none of Ireland's draft picks seem to catch on with other teams. Is it because Sparano and Philbin destroyed their careers? Or is it because they were simply graded incorrectly leading up to the draft? I know which is more likely.
