Mando on the Struggling Run Defense

Not only that. We are playing a 4-3 with 3-4 personnel.

Well, we spend so much time in nickel trying to defend the pass our lbs are expected to do more. We need to be in base defense more against the jests and against teams with young qbs inexperienced in exploiting mismatches. There are fewer and fewer of those teams out there tho

Dansby and Burnett were really good against the run and really bad against the pass. We brought in Ellerbe and Wheeler because they were good coverage LB'ers. IM we should have never got rid of Nolan as Nolan is so much better than Coyle. That hurt us more than bringing in Wheeler and Ellerbe.

This isn't the case at all. Ellerbe and Wheeler have never been good in coverage . . . in fact, both Burnett and Dansby are superior in coverage and superior against the run, in addition to being superior tacklers. We brought Ellerbe/Wheeler in because they were younger, faster, less expensive and "were suppose" to be able to bring more pressure from blitz packages.

Wait until next year before you judge the defensive personnel. When the offense, most notably Tannehill and the receivers, have enough experience in this system and can run it effectively and efficiently, the team will be in better position to get out to big leads via the passing game and make other teams have to come from behind with the pass, which is when these defensive personnel, who are better suited to defend the pass than the run, will be in position to be much more effective as intended.

With Geno running more and running effectively, it may not be a bad thing to spy him a bit.

you can't play a lot of base if the opposition is not lining up in base personnel...teams get after us in the nickle

He gets too much credit on this site. Even last year I thought he was an average DC. Nolan is leaps and bounds better than Coyle in all phases of the game.
It's week 17 and Coyle is now saying it's unacceptable? Having a crappy run defense was apparently acceptable for the first 16 weeks.

The pass defense has improved under Coyle and he's done a pretty good job of coaching up the DB's (which is his specialty), but the run defense has nose-dived. Under other DC's, our run defense was great, but our pass defense sucked. It would be nice to have a COMPLETE defense one day.

The reason you guys have a shot at postseason is b/c of your D. I get being upset at the run D but you shouldn't be bashing the D overall. w/o their play you'd be in last place right now.

I think that has alot to do with the players. Grimes (Mr. Glass when he was available), Carroll and Wilson are way better than Davis, Smith, Sapp and Nate Ness. Give Nolan the players we have now and I think our pass defense gets even better.

I agree with this. But realize, Ryan Tannehill is a very sensitive subject on this website so the offense being 24th in the league in scoring would somewhat throw him into the light in a negative way. It's not all on him, but the offense as a complete unit just hasn't been very good.

Miami and Baltimore are the only 2 teams ranked in the 20's in points per game that have a shot at the playoffs. (Miami 24th and Baltimore 26th).

Meanwhile the defense is in the top 10 in sacks and INT's and in the top 10 in least amount of points given up per game.

Grimes is obviously better than any of the dudes Nolan had to work with, but he also had Carroll and Wilson and they weren't very good (granted they were younger and greener at that time). The overall talent is better for sure, but I think Coyle deserves some credit for Carroll's improvement at least.

Ill give Coyle credit for coahcing up Carroll and Wilson. Also remember they were rookies with Nolan. Maybe they just needed experience. They both still get burnt bad from time to time though. Grimes typically never does.

I think some folks get fooled b/c of the #s thinking Ryan has improved much more than he actually has. he HAS improved w/o a doubt and looks like he can be a good QB in the coming years but he's not there yet. if he was you'd be resting players this week or playing to win a division.
