3. Philbin is similarly impressive and comes with hopes he might bring some of the Green Bay success to the Dolphins -- as in tangibly. There is talk he might bring quarterback coach Tom Clements with him to Miami as the offensive coordinator. There is talk he might be able to recruit Matt Flynn, Green Bay's backup quarterback, to the Dolphins as well.
I suggest the Dolphins judge Philbin on his own merits. You don't hire a guy based on what else the guy might bring you. That's like a woman that marries a man mostly because he's got money. Rarely works out.
I asked a source close to Philbin what he emotional state is. You'll recall Philbin had a son who drowned last week. He stayed away from the Packers much of the time last week before coaching from the press box on Sunday.
I am told Philbin has assured the Dolphins through his agent and will do so again in person that he is willing, ready and eager to move on with his career and that he is emotionally fine.
Many of you want me to tell you who I believe should get the job. I cannot because I'm not going to pretend to know these guys intimately enough to gauge which is best. I am not in the interviews. I have not actually sat down with any of them.
Any journalist giving you an opinion on which candidate would be best ... run away from that idiot.

I am pretty confident that Philbin is NOT "emotionally fine"...one week after tragically losing his son, he will never be. Is he willing to take on a head coaching position so quickly, and is he the best possible candidate? Those arfe the 2 questions that need to be adressed...

For all those hoping for Philbin because Flynn will follow need to realize it does not work like that.

I just want a head coach at this point. There gonna pick who there gonna pick and i will support the coach like i have every single one.

If Miami hires Philbin you better believe it works like that way and honestly it should. Flynn could run the offense to a T and who the hell cares how much he will cost. If you have a out in the contractt you can get rid of him if he doesn't live up to expectations. And if he does you have yourself a franchise QB. You can then draft playmakers for a change instead of cornfed lineman.

You are just hoping it works like that. He will go where the best contract is and no good agent will get him a contract with an easy out clause for the team if he does not play well.

I don't think any parent ever gets over having to bury their child however, I do think that football may be Philbin's "escape" from having to deal with it emotionally. I lost my mom very quickly and at a young age and I just immersed myself in other things so not to think about it...it was way too painful but eventually you learn to cope with it. I don't think his tragic loss will impede his ability to focus on being the head coach of a team, it may even give him greater focus as he tries to block out everything else to ease the pain. At least that was my experience.

None of us know what Philbin's emotional state is and it shouldn't be a reason to deny him the head coaching job. I guarantee that not even his wife and kids know what's going through his head right now but he seems anxious and ready to be a head coach, completely focused on furthering his career.

For what its worth, Kiper was asked on ESPN a few weeks back where Flynn would rank against the other qbs in this year's draft. He said he would be third (based on his years of experience on the bench, knowledge of the pro game, and what he's shown with the limited time he's played). I wouldn't be against bringing in Philbin and Clements to keep this offense moving in the right direction with Flynn. That way we could use the draft to continue improving the o-line, get some secondary help, and get a pass rusher opposite Wake. Keeping Bowles (with a hefty raise) as a DC would provide some needed continuity as well.

Not sure if i'm reading that right, but that type of clause would only benefit the team, not the player.

If we do manage to get Philbin (which i'm hoping) and he does bring in Clements, then there's a very good chance we can get Flynn in here and see what he's got as a starter. He will get paid what the market says he will get paid. I doubt just cause we have the coaches we are going to get him on the cheap. So your argument that he will go to the highest $$ is true but if we want him we will pay it. Just depends on how they really feel about Flynn in GB (which none of us are 100% on)

I am not confident that he would be a good candidate for a head coaching job at this point. First of all, he is not emotionally ready to deal with a very unhappy fan base that will be up his a$@ at the slightest sign of trouble. Next, he doesn't call the plays for Green Bay. That is like the waiter taking credit for the food that the chef cooked. Finally, I am not sold on Matt Flynn. He looks like Scott Mitchell, or Kevin Kolb to me. I am disappointed that they did not take Zimmer. The Dolphins need a coach that will light a spark under the players. Philbin appears to be too soft spoken to me.

The article makes a good point to judge philbin on philbin not on the package he may or not bring from greenbay, as a fan thats hard to do, especially since the info on these cadidates is so minimal. I don't take too much away for not being the play caller because he's surely still implementing it and running it every day, correct? I wouldnt make the waiter/chef comparison so much... Because hes learned the recipe over the past few years, doubtful he is just blindly putting it out. Cant hurt being the right hand man of the guy calling one of the most exciting offenses in the league.

It only works if Flynn actually is the future. Then all works. I say roll the dice and get a stud OLB, CB, or OL in this first round after getting flynn. Philbin knows Flynn and has a coaching advantage there. But how he schools Moore as well is what I would look for. How does he get the other guy ready too?
