It is a good read. Strong points around. I am happy that Mando points out the regression of Miami's defense under Joe Philbin and Kevin Coyle. Points allowed is the biggest indicator. The two areas that bother me personally is the inability to close out games and how they seem to give up points after the Miami's offense scores. So frustrating.

Joe Philbin will not jettison Kevin Coyle. Therefore, the improvement of the defense will be the responsibility of Dennis Hickey. Hickey will need use resources to upgrade the personnel to such a point to overcome Coyle' shortcomings. Along with talent and athletic ability, the newcomers need to have a "leadership gene" in their DNA. I am not convinced there are great leaders currently on defense.

With that said, there is no way Joe Philbin axes Kevin Coyle. Philbin will show the same "patience" with Coyle that Ross showed Philbin. Kevin Coyle is so far over his head. Joe Philbin would have a better chance of surviving 2015 with an upgrade at DC. Imagine if he hired a Butch Davis or an Eric Mangini. However, he will be stubborn (like he wanted to with Mike Sherman and Jim Turner) and keep his hand picked DC. In the end, Philbin's loyalty could be is undoing.

I am not pleased that Philbin will be back and I feel Coyle could be replaced but it is what it is and I hope Hickey can improve the defense himself but I have to question your choices in coaches sometimes Hayden.....like Mangini???

I prefer to stick with Coyle.

I agree.. Coyle isnt going no where.. Its too easy to keep everything the same and its hard to make changes.. Philbin doesnt like hard...

and since you mentioned it... my concern is giving up too many 3rd down conversions.. 3rd and 1 or 3rd and 17 makes no difference to the opposing offense..

I wish Ross would heavy hand Joe into getting rid of Coyle but doubt he does that two years in a row.

I know Coyle has been really unpopular. I don't think he's as bad as most posters, but I definitely could be wrong. I would, though, like to see what this defense would be like with even one above-average linebacker, because, right now, we have none.

It's just awesome that we need to draft players who instead of succeeding because of their coaches, have to be good enough to succeed in spite of the coaching.

Surely this is a great way to build a football team.

Coyle needs to go. Philbin should've received an ultimatum like he did with Sherman and Turner, or those two dip****s would STILL be here.

Corners are old, Line is made up of two different schemes, high draft picks can't make it on the field, and the coaching sucks.

keeping this coaching staff and FO intact for one more year was Ross's plan all along. There contract runs out after the 2015 season, when if this team is still mediocre it will blow up then. No choice but to do that. the incumbent will know that Ross will give them time to get it right he has given philbin and company 4 years.

I realize everyone assumes these final decisions are made by Ross. However, I would expect that these decisions are made after consulting with the likes of Marino, Aponte, Hickey and others close to Ross. I also expect decisions about the coordinators are not entirely Philbin's call. None of us really understand all of the dynamics behind the scenes with decisions, but I would like to think that Ross and his inner circle would replace Coyle if there was a clear improvement with his replacement.

I think the defensive issues are talent related (and I've been a defensive supporter). We need big run stuffing tackles, a real MLB, a #2 CB, slot CB and a free safety right off the bat. Then there's the problem of our 2 best defenders (arguably anyway) Wake and Grimes getting long in the tooth. Not sure we'll be able to fix the defense in one offseason. My first round pick is a big fat defensive tackle or CB unless a big time playmaking WR (not freakin potential, I believe on drafting on football production not 6'5", 230 runs a 4.3 but is developmental) or TE is available. Think we need to fix the O-line with FA or in the later rounds as I can't see spending a high pick on a guard.

I don't see any value in hiring a coach and telling him who his assistants should be. Then again, I don't see much value in bringing Philbin back. I'm weird that way.

Ross made it clear Philbin has complete control of his staff unless like last year he gives him the ultimatum to get rid of a coach. I don't see that happening with Coyle this year.

Well everyone has questions about Philbin and Coyle but the position coaches on the defensive side are actually pretty good. I do think that the interior of the D-line just wore out. We mainly used Starks, Odrick and Mitchell...very few snaps per game by undrafted rookie Anthony Johnson...he was getting maybe 10 snaps a game until he got hurt. I think the DT spot is our biggest issue on defense...a big DT would help clog up the running lanes and take up blockers to allow the other D-lineman to have one-on-one matchups to the QB...at that point it's who's got the better players (which more often then not we haven't). Even if we got a good MLB, he wouldn't be allowed to flow down to the play because the opposing O-line is often getting to the 2nd level to block our linebackers out of the play. You can't tell me that if we had someone like Suh on that D-line the whole defense wouldn't look a ton better than it does right now.

Joe Philbin's contract gives him the exclusive right to hire/fire assistants. So Stephen Ross is not able to just hire Rex Ryan.

Joe Philbin last yr. was FORCED to fire Sherman/Turner via consequence of losing own job. That consequence gone this yr. when Ross endorsed.

Joe Philbin is very loyal to his guys. Remember, he hired Kevin Coyle over Todd Bowles, who was interested in staying as HC or DC.
