New England Patriots secondary coach Eric Mangini, whose contract essentially expired after Super Bowl XXXIX and who is being pursued by three different teams in need of a defensive coordinator, interviewed in Miami for much of the day on Thursday with new Dolphins coach Nick Saban, ESPN.com has learned.

It is believed that Mangini was offered the Miami coordinator's position at an average salary of about $800,000.

Two league sources said Thursday night that their understanding was that, despite his strong ties to Belichick, Mangini would not return to the Patriots.

The Miami offer probably will be the largest, as Saban has spared no expense in trying to assemble a top-flight staff. Offensive coordinator Scott Linehan, for instance, will earn $850,000 per year after departing the Minnesota Vikings following three years there, to join the Saban staff.

It is believed the Browns will make an offer in the $600,000-$700,000 range. But one advantage the Browns have, beyond finances and Mangini's relationship with Crennel, is that the coach is the brother-in-law of Cleveland Indians general manager Mark Shapiro, and those family ties could be a factor. Mangini also worked in the past with Phil Savage, the Browns' new general manager.

he'll be in Cleveland tommorow, and thats where he'll stay

on a side note, Wayne better pray that the Saban experiment works out, because if he doesn't, Huizenga's will be paying out the azz to replace these coaches

Im a little surprised we didnt offer him more. The only reason for him to come to Miami would be the money, and we offered big deals to Houck and Linehan didnt we?

only 50,000 less than Linehan, and Eric has never been a coordinator before

It is very shocking that he might not return to the pats. I just hope that the money will be his main thing by making his decision.

$150,000 extra a year to coach for a team under Saban and in a state with no income tax??? It's a no-brainer (for me, at least). The net ~ $200k a year buys a summer home in Cleveland and lots of plane tickets to see his Bro-in-Law

For the life of me, I've never understood those souls that - given choices - would CHOOSE to live in Cleveland...a place most Clevelanders spend their lives scheming to ESCAPE!

It'd be like a sane, law-abiding person choosing to live in Raiford.

well, if you know Eric's past, then you'll know he could care less about money...he was offered 1 mil by the Raiders last year, but spurned them to stay with NE, making a quarter of that

Right thought but wrong angle.

Who wants a defensive coordinator whose wife drags him around by his 'nads? :goof:

Well, this is where sometimes you have to draw the line because the dolphins have to be conscious of how much money who is getting, because it's public knowledge in this business unlike some others. For instance, Hudson Houck is getting about the same amount of money that Scott Linehan is getting. Is that going to grate on Linehan? What will happen when/if Houck and Linehan disagree on something? If Houck were making more than Linehan, as I'm sure Alex Gibbs is making more than his OC, that might lead to problems.

That particular issue does not necessarily apply to the d-coord position, but at some point you've got to start trying to save Huizenga some money SOMEWHERE. I mean it is widely believed that whoever was going to be our OC, would have a large amount of freedom to run the offense, but whoever is going to be our DC, would have to suffer a lot of interference from Saban, just like Belichick. This is why, IMO, for a while, Romeo Crennell was not offered head coaching positions...because of the impression that Belichick was the guy really running that defense. If Saban gave a bunch of money to Mangini, then Mangini steps over here and finds that Saban wants to have a lot of say in the defense, Mangini would have to wonder, why are you paying me then if you're just going to do it?

IMO, Mangini's rep might be too high right now. We need a guy more like Pees, experience working under Saban, experience coaching in the NFL, trying to make a name for himself and willing to be kind of an underpaid understudy of Saban's. You don't see Bill Parcells pulling the best names in the business to work under him, and you didn't see Belichick do that either where it concerned defensive coordinator, as Romeo Crennell at the time was not a high pedigree high reputation coach IMO when Bill pulled him to be his DC.
