Manning Is DONE, folks....

You know it, I know it...let's just hope the Colts don't know it.

I think that all of you are pompously blowing hot air. You know no particulars as to P MANNING and his medical condition. And you aren't surgeons. In the early '60s, a very good, very fast NY RANGER Foward named ROD GILBERT had a spinal fusion operation, and continued to play Hockey very well.

Believe what you want to believe.

Peyton is no eli!!!!!! The younger brother is way better wish peyton would just go away already and his stupid commercials....

I am living proof that this is true. Mine was a double discectomy with fusion and titanium plate with six screws at C5-6 and C6-7. My left arm fatigues very easily.

I have problems with my right arm fatiguing ever so often. I don't think it has much to do with bad nerves though.:chuckle:

I just wanted to chip in with my thoughts on this. I was surprised to be overcome with serious neck pain over a week ago but didn't know that it would be enduring indefinitely. My combined behaviors have put far too much stress on my neck and once the nerve got irritated, the pain was bad but the feeling that you were unable to do anything at all physically because your neck couldn't endure the stress was worse. I couldn't imagine playing football with anything close to the neck problems I was having, and mine were just from accumulated bad posture.

I can't say though whether Manning's injury is going to heal to where he doesn't feel constant pain in his neck. But if it doesn't then he will have a hard time playing. That's why he went through the surgery so close to the start of last season, because you can't simply play through a genuine neck problem.

We may not be surgeons, but we are recipients of spinal fusions on different levels ... Gilbert might have been lucky enough to get past the pain and numbness ... BUT; that is a rare instance ... I was specifically asked not to compete any longer in Martial Arts Competitions, due to the physical nature of hand to hand combat ... If Manning gets passed by team doctor's to play again, than I wish him all the luck in the world ... but knowing what I know about spinal fusion and all the after affects, I'd be surprised If any Doctor or Team Physician passes him ... We all go through Therapy at some point, with varying degrees of success!!! my guess is Manning is having complications in his throwing arm due to the nerves ... But HEY if you want to criticize us fusion recipients for giving the fans our opinions, go ahead ... but i think you should research the condition and surgery to educate yourself to understand why we would DOUBT Manning's ability to come back!!!

No, I am not a surgeon. I am a Physician in Internal Medicine. I am the guy that diagnosis this and sends this to the surgeon, and I DO know damn well what I am talking about. Perhaps Peyton should look into a career in the NHL.

can anyone with a better memory recall if there was another NFL player who recently had a similar fusion to what Manning had? I remember a reference to a defensive player, I think from the Vikes. Safety or Linebacker, cant remember. Saw it on espn around late august when the Manning thing broke. I believe the guy returned the next year to play a few more seasons.

Excellent question. What is the precedent for an NFL player, not NHL. And, has there been any qbs who have recovered from this type of fusion procedure?

Based on what I am reading I would say Manning's days are near over. Its a shame. He was one of the greatest. If I was the FO I would not take the chance.

"Thaiyananthan explained to me that fighter pilots who have this injury would be pulled out of their flight assignments. While players have come back in the NFL -- a recent example is Steve Slaton of the Texans -- there are no known quarterbacks, and among the more notable players who didn't return is Sterling Sharpe, whose career was ended after similar surgery. A
study presented
to a 2010 meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons by Dr. Wellington K. Hsu found 40 players had come back from similar surgery to play in the NFL again."

Just FYI....Steve Slaton is playing with a C5-6 fusion (ACDF). It all comes down to having or not having residual effects after the surgery. I treat people and give disability ratings to people that have cervical fusions all the time. Some people can get back to pretty high function in just over 6 months. But, some people have lasting residual effects such as weakness and pain that limit them for a long time, if not forever. Peyton and his family obviously have a genetic tendency toward spine conditions (refer to his older brother). I wouldn't bank my buck on him even if he is Peyton Manning.

I would be inclined to agree and I know almost nothing about his injury, but almost everyone said Drew Brees would never come back from his shoulder injury which was supposed to affect his throwing as well.

For that reason alone, I will never write off a great player because of an injury. Is it a long shot Manning regains his pre-injury form, but I wouldn't bet against it.

HGH and other anabolics do not heal bone & nerve fiber. besides, Peyton has tripped the pond for 'stem cell' injections trying to regen his injured vertebrae, no? and he's probably trying out 'blood spinning' (PRP). but there's no magic wand for this; it's a crapshoot. he's heard the data. so have the Colts. they're not paying out 28m on a 'maybe', ya think? and for all the covetous pronouncement, do you really think Ross will? haven't we long seen the negative effects of this team playing 'paper' quarterbacks (Culpepper/Penne/White). every play will be an offered prayer. anyone really wanna see him go out on a gurney?
