The man turns 22 in April, the fact that he was able to make ANY contribution this year is a miracle. I remember he was a big part of that win against the Chargers, he had a sack and he was makin plays all over the place playin that 3-4 NT. I see a few people saying on this board that he will develop into a 3-4 DE... I don't see how that makes sense, he's listed as 6-6 329 on nfl.com so I'm assuming that's accurate and that's a pretty massive DT at any position. If Saban can coach this kid up and get him to develop (if anyone can Saban can) we could have a monster in the middle of our defense for God knows how many years. It'd be great to have another Tim Bowens type and we won't have to worry about getting another 3-4 NT which are rare.

He will be our NT for the next 10 years. He won't be playing any DE.

keith traylor may not be around this season so we might have to depend on manny to play NT and from what i saw last season hes capable of playing well at NT

from what i've seen of Manny Wright i'm impressed. especially considering how young he is. i think he is going to be a beast in the middle for many years.

what a great 5th rounder
Exactly. The best part is that we only used a 5th on him.

At 6-6, 329 is going to be tough for Wright to make it at NT. I think the tallest players at NT right now are Ted Washington at 6'5 and Maake Kemouetu at 6'4. And they're extremely big and listed at Ted's 365 lbs and Makke's 350 lbs. Just hard for taller guys to gain and keep leverage at NT unless they're mammoths. Wright may be a such a special player that he doesn't need to gain the 20+ lbs to play NT. Or gain it and not lose a lot of the explosive potential we saw last year. But many like me feel a stronger, leaner, and faster Wright would be better as 4-3 DT/3-4 DE position similalr to that played by Seymour (6'6, 310 lbs) than as a potential undersized NT (for his height, not weight).

his size is def not a factor here are some familiar names at DT that are the same size and very effective....Haynesworht is 6-6 320, Carstens 6-5 300, vonnie did well this year and hes 6-5 288, john Henderson of the Jags is one inch taller and one pound lighter at 6-7 328 and he is a dominant force, there are more too but i think being tall at that position helps you every inch counts esp when you gotta deflect passes across the middle...he will be a solid player lets just hope he keeps his drive or else Saban will have to make him cry again on national TV.....what doesnt kill ya makes you stronger Manny keep working!!!!!!

But any 6'6" 330 guys play at Nose-Tackle? Not questioning the potential of Manny being able to play DT in a 4-3 defense, but his best potential as a NT in the 3-4 defense or DE in a 3-4 defense which the Fins played a lot last year. And probably will even more with 3-4 guy Capers as defensive coordinator.

I don't think that we should discredit Vickerson, either. Losing him, I thought, was the 2nd most devistating injury before the season started (Poole being #1.) Thanks to Mr Traylor and his contributions all season long, Vickerson's loss got more trivial. Having 2 young NT's like that could keep plenty of fuel in their tanks for years to come. It's time for both of them to shine.

I always thought our D was much better suited for a 4-3 but with the additions of Holliday and Carter manning down those DE spots and JT and ZT adjusting well to 3-4 lb wer'e good. Wer'e more than good actually, and some of the better NTs in the league run about 310-320 such as Jamal Williams and Kelly Gregg. I don't think an extra inch on Manny is going to hurt him all that much with leverage and as long he learns the position well he should be fine.

You listed a bunch of defensive tackles. Manny Wright would be a monster of a defensive tackle... in the 4-3. Thing is he wouldn't be a monster of a nose tackle in the 3-4. He may be, but he needs that extra weight to jam up 2 holes. Playing 2 gaps isn't easy. He is your prototypical Richard Seymour type. Saban is alot like Belichick, and I believe that is why Wright was brought in, to play that dominant 3-4 end.
