Manuel Wright

Maybe "jump" was a bad word choice. However, 1st round talent or not, no other team took him earlier. That indicates that while he might have plenty of talent, his value is in the 5th or 6th round.

His value this year in the supplemental draft is 5th or 6th round. With another college year under his belt a lot of people thought he could be a 1st or 2nd round pick next year.

He is a 1st round talent with a 5th round work ethic. Which is why he fell to the 5th round :)

Exactly my point. A talented guy with some question marks. We see the same sorts of things every year. Guys that have all the talent in the world but slip for one reason or another. Wright is one of those guys - has potential, but comes with some baggage.

All in all, I think he represents great value for us, since there is very little risk attached due to the low level pick we used on him. If he sucks, we cut his a$$ and move on.

That is true. Basically he will have to show zero improvement from now till the beginning of the year to not make the team. He was not taken to be a 5 month project.

He's in TERRIBLE condition. Like Z said, he was GASSSED after about 3 plays. At USC he must have spent all his free time drinking milk shakes, eating McDonalds' by the bushel and smoking 5 packs of cigarettes a day.

Once he gets in shape he will be good Im sure he will improve.

Ok, I have to ask. Was I high last night, or were all of you? Did Wright or did he not make a serious push on the Jason Glenn interception? Yes, the rest of the time he looked gassed, but I'm pretty sure I'm not making this up.
Here is the play you are talking about.

I think Saban plans on fielding the most competitive team he can, so will he cut loose a veteran who could contribute more this year to carry the future potential of Wright on the 53 man roster? How many DTs do you think we'll carry? Four, or possibly five.
Vickerson looks like he is more ready to contribute this year, if we want to keep a young guy. Shaw also appears to be much more ready. Right now, we have Traylor and Zgonina as starters. Holliday could also be one of the starters very soon.
Chester also could be ready by the start of the season. He could also begin the season on PUP, it is too soon to know which is most likely.
If we carry four DEs, Taylor, Carter, Roth and Bowens;
and five DTs, Traylor, Holliday, Zgonina, Vickerson, and Chester or Shaw, who all are more ready to contribute right out of the gate, what do we do with Wright? There is also Dario Romero who didn't do badly as a reserve last year.
Maybe one option would be for him to have a mysterious injury and place him on IR for the season, so he can get in top shape for 2006. ;)

Yes hell make it too much upside and potential. He will not make any type of impact however until he gets his fat *** in shape

After watching it a few times, it really doesn't look like Wright did much blocking in that play.

Notice what I wrote about the play.

I saw the same as you. I also saw him turn around and look for someone to block when Glenn was returning the ball. His block attempt wasn't the greatest as he seemed tired, but he still got his hands on a guy. It's a good sign that he was aware enough to turn and look for someone to block after the interception.

Notice I said the block attempt was weak, but I was happy that he had the awareness to turn and try. He at least touched the guy, althought I would have prefered that he roled him over.

Manny Wright is a shmuck. As I was leaving my hotel in downtown Cleveland, he and a bunch of other Dolphins were entering and I stopped him to say hi and wish him well. He looked at me like I didn't deserve his time, almost resisting to shake my hand. Add him to my list of players I care not to see on the roster come regular season.

Manny Wright is a kid, who could become a huge part of the future of this franchise.

I havent seen the game yet, it'll be downloaded by the time i get home; so i'm not going to pass comment on the way he played.

But a few people, whose opinions I respect, have commented that he really wasnt that bad... i'll obviously make my own judgement, but I want the kid to succeed. we've only had him for a month, he's not stupid - he knows that if he is not in shape then he isn't going to make it. he is a huge project, but his upside and potential is tremendous.
