Marino: Heart of a Champion

Dan was great, on and off the field. I was taken to the hospital the morning of the 1991 KC/Miami playoff game after having a big seizure. As I was getting pulled out the CAT scan I was starting to regain consciousness. They told me I had a brain tumor, and would have to stay in the hospital for at least the day. The first thing I did was ask if I would have a TV set so I could watch the game.

After my surgery I was in a coma for a few weeks. My girlfriend sent a message to Dan telling him my situation, and he wrote a great letter. My tumor got removed after a few surgeries and I've been doing great ever since. I still have the issue of the SI that had him on the cover after that game sitting on my wall in a frame, along with the letter.

Dan provided hope in every game, and gives so much hope to many people off the field. A true champion.

That's awesome. That's the kind of stuff nobody hears about but really shows alot about a person's character and heart. Thanks for sharing that with us. I don't need a stupid overrated ring to tell me he's a champion.

Let me guess, you're gonna come up with that lame-*** "a superbowl's a team accomplishment" excuse: Well, look at HIS stats in the superbowl. 11 td's, 0 ints, 3 MVPs.

Also, I know some of you clods are gonna say, "so does that mean Dilfer is better than Marino?"...No, but when it comes down to choosing between 2 great QB's, I'll take the one who owns 4 SB rings(and 3 SB MVPs) over the one who owns none.

Montana was a great QB, no doubt. But the difference between Marino and Montana IS the teams they played with and the systems of those teams. It DOES have a lot to do with it.

I played professional baseball and I can tell you first hand that team sports such as Football, Baseball, Basketball etc. are just that: Team sports.
Can you say Barry Bonds??? Without a doubt will probably go down as the greatest Baseball player ever, but he's never won a title.

Joe was a great QB and deserves alot of credit, but just because of 4 good games doesn't mean he was the best. Marino had 17 years of good/great games!

The argument is listed in "the greatests sports arguments" and the general concensus seems to be if you put Marino on San Fans team he gets the same number of rings (if not more) and if you put Montana on Miami he would still be good but not labled with the title of the greatest QB.

I watched them both play and I wont lie, I hated to see close games because you knew Montana would figure some way out to win. BUT Come on Marino had 2 good wide receivers in duper and clayton but they were TINY. He was puttin up those numbers with NO RUNNING GAME!! Even with doubling up the wide outs he still made plays!! PLus he was one of the FEW that would through to Dions side even in his prime!!
