Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino intends to withdraw from a concussion-related lawsuit against the National Football League, according to a report by the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Marino, 52, was one of 15 players who filed a lawsuit in federal court in Philadelphia last week. The plaintiffs joined more than 4,800 others who have alleged that the NFL misled players about the long-term dangers of concussions. The NFL has denied those claims.

The newsaper, citing a source, said the former Miami Dolphins legend and his lawyers will be in discussions to withdraw from the lawsuit.

"It was never Marino's intention to initiate litigation in this case, but to ensure that in the event he had adverse health consequences down the road, he would be covered with health benefits. They are working to correct the error," a source told to the Sun-Sentinel.

Marino and his lawyers are attempting to discover how Marino's name was joined to the lawsuit, according to the report.

The lawsuit doesn't specify any medical problems suffered by the plaintiffs, including Marino, who retired in 1999. It seeks unspecified damages and medical monitoring.

The NFL and the original group of players agreed on a $765 million settlement last August. But the settlement was rejected by a federal judge in January.

Well...if its true then thats some bad luck PR for Marino.

Nothing wrong with putting a place holder on money in the event 10 years down the road he does suffer from issues.

If it turns out he wasn't an accidental plaintiff, he has probably burned some bridges with the other plaintiffs by reneging on his assistance in the case. There probably isn't a bigger name that can help the lawsuit gain momentum. Like Vaark said, his actions don't bode well for him being hired by the fins in any decision making capacity.

"Hey Lisa, where do we keep those Adverse Health Consequences Down the Road Inclusion forms?"

"They're in the folder labeled NFL CTE Lawsuit Filings."

C'mon guys. "... working to correct the error"

What a joke Dan has made of himself with his PR dealings in recent years. And he is trying to getting a job with the organization in some capacity?

I hate to say it, but just because he is one of the greatest QB's ever doesn't make him Yoda. As we compare retirement Dan to QB Dan, one can't help but appreciate how masterful Shula was in tailoring an offense around Dan Marino.

But an NFL Executive he is not.

I've been wanting Ross to inject more Dolphin Legacy players into the organization as mentors and leaders, but that doesn't mean the best players make the best decision makers.

He was never concussed IRRC.

One of the original articles specifically talks about a game against Seattle where he was out of it and went back in the game. He later asked a trainer if they won the game.

Dan Marino once threw a game-winning pass that he didn’t remember, and he wasn’t even sure after if the Dolphins had won.

Don Shula, who allowed a dazed Marino to return to action, even quipped after that “when he came out of the game in the fourth quarter, he wasn’t sure where he was.”

I think this confirms that I don't want Marino in a FO capacity. I was for it this offseason because I felt he would bring back some gravitas and trust to the org, but Marino is making himself look worse and worse with recent PR blunders. And now this latest thing makes him appear wishy-washy as ever.

No matter what, this makes him look bad. If this was an accidental filing, he looks like a doof. If he caved to pressure, he looks weak. If he stayed with the lawsuit, he looked like a greedy opportunist. Lose/lose all around for Danny on this matter.

Along with his short tenure with the Dolphins FO a decade ago, this latest incident somewhat confirms his indecisiveness off the field. Not a good quality for a front office type.

Unlike Elway who has Stanford pedigree and a business mind, perhaps this kind of work isn't suitable for Marino. Starting to feel bad for the guy as football was the one thing in life he was truly excellent at and I feel like he kind of misses being the best at something and he knows he will never have that opportunity again.

(I told Zounds I wouldn't be back until September, but this story piqued my interest and I had to comment. Guess I am wishy-washy just like Dan! :p )

Something fishy here. The day after we hear he's in a lawsuit he withdraws the day after? Maybe the overwhelming backlash made him change his mind? He wasn't popular on here yesterday that's for sure

Yeah this doesn't look good. Tony Kornheiser was talking on his radio show today about how strange it was that as soon as Marino was fired from CBS he then gets into this concussion debate with all of these other guys.

The way i see it , is Dan Marino is no God , He is only Human ,IF Marino did file and as said was ONLY Protecting himself for medical issues later down the road , then i dont look down on him one bit , They played Football back in his days , not two hand touch , like today , for instances , Greg Loyd was playing for the Steelers when Loyd told the media that he was going to knock Marino into next week , And he did , go look it up , he tried to hurt Danny ,im not sure if Marino filed anything or not , but if he did i couldnt hold nothing against him , nomore than the other 4,800 players that filed , If it was one of us that played back in the day , when they played football , then i dont see a one that wouldnt wont to protect himself , esp if you had as many kids as Danny has , IMO it dont or wouldnt change the way i feel about Danny if he had of filed , he is just protecting himself for the future ....Hes only Human ..

A little off topic, but Jason Taylor will have a permanent position in the organization before Marino does....
