Market for Soliai has been set - 5 years/$40 million

Well if the market is set for Soliai @ $40m for 5 years with $18m guaranteed, than IMO you need to multiple that by 3x's when you include Langford and Wake!!! not to mention Henne, IF they choose to resign him after this season ... now your looking at $54m in guaranteed money for 3 players on the defensive side of the ball in 1 year alone .. than you have to think about Long in 2013; with Davis and Smith the follow a year after that ... can this team afford all that ... whatta you guys think?

That sounds really hefty. Maybe some guys will come a lil cheaper on the hometown discount factor :rolleyes2: Who even does that these days?

but I think that deal, or even a little more would be a good deal for him. By the end of the deal, he'd be 32 and if he plays at a high level until he's 32, that'd be great.

Unfortunately apparently the FO and agents are far apart on Soliai, Langford, and Wake. I was particularly troubled by some Twitter comments made by David Canter a few weeks ago that seemed to indicate Soliai wasn't going to take a long-term deal anytime soon unless it paid him close to the amount he's making as a tag this season. This was irritating because IMHO getting Soliai signed long-term would have been the single most helpful thing in getting some more space under the cap for another impact FA or two, e.g. OL or TE.

Cowboys just signed NT Jay Ratliff for 5 years/$40 million with $18 million or so guaranteed per espndallas.com and Pft.com

how does the contract of a three time pro bowler set the market for Solai unless u are meaning less

Very good point...Can we afford everyone

our middle linebacker is already one of the top paid at his position
Soliai will be paid top 5 at his position
Langford will be paid top 5 at his position
Wake will be paid top money at his position
Starks is making 3.6 million this season and 3.7 million next season
Burnett is at a 5 year 20 million contract

Decision on Henne will need to be made
He's a bargain at $555,000 but expect that number to go up
at least 10 fold or more if we sign him long term

Don't see everyone staying

lol at most ppl on this board. When Soliai goes to another team and destroys every center in the league all of you will be saying "why didnt we pay Soliai what he wanted?". After the 20th if there is no contract the Dolphins will have to Franchise him again (at 120%) to keep him. If he hits FA teams will be offering him big money. Ireland needs grow some balls and pay the man or watch him walk! People don't understand that it takes time to develop into a great NT. Not everyone comes into the league as a stud at their position. IT TAKES TIME and Soliai put in the work to become the man he is today.

we have nothing to lose right now waiting a few games into the season to make sure he still is playing at a high level. First and foremost one very good season does not make Solai a great NT. It all depends on what his agent is asking for, Ratliff has by far proven himself and deserves that kind of contract, Solai has not been on his level but a contract slightly less might be a smart option. i dont see what ireland has done in this matter not having balls. we shall see what Solai does this season very soon.

The Dolphins are going to mess around and lose one of the best young NT's in the game if they don't resolve Soliai's contract. At 27, Paul Soliai is a seasoned vet just entering the prime of his career. He showed signs in 2009 and went all out in 2010 . . . pro bowl or not, I know Soliai has the goods and the longer we wait the more the contract goes up in value. This should have gotten done before the 2010 season to be honest.

i'm shocked solai is still playin on that $12 mil tender...i thought for sure they'd want to lessen that cap hit by going long term but maybe we're in show me mode for another year...

The "market price" is based on what buyers are willing to pay.

Do you think other NFL teams would pay 5 years/$40 million for Paul Soliai?

Zero chance.

Jay Ratliff is a 3-time pro bowler (2008,2009,2010), with 25 sacks under his belt. A NFL team could justify paying 5 years/$40 million for him.

But not for Paul Soliai.

Imagine if Paul Soliai was drafted by another team, and had his current stats with another team. And today, we hear that the Miami Dolphins just signed this "Paul Soliai" guy for 5 years/$40 million. We'd all be like "Paul who?" We'd look at this guys stats, lack of pro bowl appearances, and be scratching our heads.

Paul Soliai might be a great NT today. But fair or not, reality is that his "market price" is nowhere near that of Jay Ratliff. And since no other team will pay Paul Soliai $40 million, we don't have to either.

Charles Johnson just got a huge deal, and ALOT of people were like "Charles who?", young NT's are hard to find, especially ones that have developed. The Dolphins have to set trends, not worry about what other teams are going to do. Soliai always had the talent, discipline was the problem and he came into camp ready to go. Maybe his motivation is to get a long term deal, but discipline doesn't seem to be a problem anymore.

8 million per is fine, about what I expected . . . and Soliai is only 27. People said he only did it for 1 year . . . he showed signs at the end of 2009 when Ferguson went down.
