Tight end MarQueis Gray has traveled an unconventional path en route to making the Miami Dolphins' 53 man roster. A four-star recruit out of high school, he signed on with the Minnesota Gophers, only to be kicked off the team due to discrepancies with his ACT scores. After he regained eligibility, Gray went on to be an “X Factor” for the Gophers, serving as their primary offensive weapon, playing wide receiver before transitioning to a dual-threat quarterback.

In his four collegiate seasons, Gray passed for 2,053 yards and 14 touchdowns, rushed for 1,731 yards and 12 touchdowns and caught 60 passes for 766 yards and six scores.

Gray went undrafted in the 2013 NFL Draft, but spent time with the San Francisco 49ers, the Cleveland Browns and the Minnesota Vikings before being claimed by the Bills in November of last season. The 6’4” 242-pound tight end quickly made himself known when he caught a 41-yard pass in his first game with the Bills against the Browns, who had released him just weeks prior.

One thing that was sorely missing in Miami's offense last year was an "X" factor, the miss-match- a position that was previously held by Charles Clay. I think MarQuies Gray could be the team' X factor this year. He's a freak of nature athlete who has played the RB,WR,TE and the QB positions. One would agree Dominique Jones had a better pre season but they prefer to go with Gray because they recognise his potentials. He was absolutely one of the best route running TE in camp, also a better receiver.

The Charles Clay comparison is legit, imo.

Gray is like a poor man's Clay right now, with potential to be even better than Clay. I can see why the Phins kept him.

I think this represents a huge shift in thinking for the Phins compared to the previous regime. The last coaching staff would have kept Jones because he graded out as the better tight end. They also would have ditched Grant because maybe Hazel or someone else was a slightly more polished route runner. This staff recognizes the value of unique abilities.

I also think the fact that they are all new and have some time, they have the ability to take a lot of risks early. Without fear of losing their jobs.

We have more "upside" players on the roster than I remember in a long time.

I think it's clear Mike T and case agreed that the roster needed more natural talent, where as philbin and his staff seemed to care more about better technical type players.

If this guy ends up being our x-factor, then we are more devoid of talent than anyone thought.

I kinda like the guy, no doubt pulling for him. I hope we line him up like an h back

He looked good on special teams during the preseason as well. IMHO if he hadn't gotten injured right before the first preseason game we would have seen more out of him on the field. He really only played significant offensive snaps in the last preseason game.

MarQueis Gray as wildcat QB, with Jakeem Grant as the sweep man?

Hey, at least MarQueis Gray would be a legit passing threat, unlike Ronnie Brown.

Better burst than clay...we will see if he develops clays polish which took years for it to click with clay...better blocker too at the same stage

Definite uograde to stoneburner a year ago for a similar role

Ok also intrigued by Gray. I think he can be a productive 3rd wheel in our system. If Gase and staff are who they claim they are then they can get average to overachieve.
