Marvin Mitchell....

only two seasons ago we had Crowder, Ayodele and Torbor at ILB. i still cry whenever i think of Ayodele trying to cover Heath Miller.

mitchell may be able to run a little more than those guys obviously...but i think if he gets run in the base d teams are gonna find ways to expose him...

kevin burnett i can tell already his weakness is gonna be the downhill run directly at him...we need the dline front to keep him clean and let him run to the ball...he's not a great poa player...but boy does he have great instincts and feel for the ball...you can make up for a lot of things at lb if you have great instincts can read and diagnose quickly and have good tools and he's got all of that...kevin burnett looks to me like possibly the steal of free agency...such a major upgrade over crowder its not funny

aj edds lack of athlieticism is gonna hurt him some but he's got pretty good instincts also which are gonna help offset some of his limitations...he's not the best sideline to sideline athlete either but i think he just needs time and he'll help us a good amount down the line

oh, i don't expect too much from Mitchell. he's a solid back-up and special teamer. nice enough to have back-ups who can move though.

as for our run D, i agree. i think we traded in some punch to upgrade our pass coverage by signing Burnett. but the way the NFL has become, i'll take that anyday. let's just hope we won't allow RB's to embarrass us like they did throughout the pre-season. way too many big gains on screens and wheel routes for my taste.

ehh...i'm not too worried about that stuff in the preseason...no gameplan just 11 on 11 show me what you got primarily individual evaluations...there's no reason with dansby and burnett and edds we shouldn't be able to cover rbs and te's down the field...we've finally got coverage lbs that won't just be exploited and so easy to gameplan in the passing game against...it used to be last year even run everyone down the field and bring your rb out of the backfield underneath for the catch and then major yards after the catch...i think its gonna be much harder to do that to us this year...we've got guys who can run and cover at ilb...there's no gonna wear a target in the passing game ilb any longer

i'm more worried about someone lining up and playing smash mouth against us as we don't have strong poa ilbs...the d front and solai are gonna have to win up front or there will be running backs scampering in our second level...

you and me both. Soliai will really have to earn that next contract.

I think that the thought process is since we likely have one of, if not the, best d-lines in football, that we can handle a smash mouth team with Soliai, Langford and Starks. Also, our depth on the D-line should help in that regard with McDaniel, Odrick and Merling all capable of rotating in and keeping guys fresh. The key to a smashmouth approach is to stick with it and grind the opposing front 7 down, so that late in the 3rd quarter and in the 4th quarter, it's easy running. I don't anticipate us having that problem. We might not be able to 'shut down' a smashmouth team, but I don't think the smashmouth approach will be effective enough against our defense as to take us out of a game.

thing is, it all starts in the middle. if your NT can't hold his blocks anymore, your run defense is going to get worse significantly, no matter what your DE's are doing. we only have one capable NT. part of the reason why i would have loved to keep Kearse around. he would have at least been able to give Soliai a breather here and there.

I think that's why they're keeping all these talented defensive linemen, rather than trading them or -- like in the case of Tony McDaniel -- letting them leave via free agency. They want everyone to be able to give 100% on every play in the rotation and be talented enough to keep offensive linemen off these LBs.

Anyway, I'm with you 100% about Burnett. I was a big fan of his when he was in San Diego and was really excited when it looked like he might sign here. The guy just gets it done.

if our guys up front maintain gap responsibility i think we'll be ok...but i have noticed this preseason starks especially not always on board with it...you don't want to create inside running lanes by just moving out of your assigment in an effort to get a better upfield rush look...don't help the opposition out

when it comes to burnett he looks night and day better than the guy i saw in dallas years ago...at that time i had pretty much pegged him as a career coverage lb who would never become an impact every down player...he's become an outstanding all around lb...i'm giddy about what we got there...i was a little concerned after a few years ago when we plucked tim dobbins off the chargers roster and ck put those cuts together and he was making good contributions there and then couldn't find the ball to save his life here we might be getting into a similar situation here with burnett as an every down player...you know maybe a product of the system in san diego...he's anything but...

the way he can just flow so nicely when dropping into passing lanes and the way he understands route concepts and coverage concepts he's outstanding...i guarantee if he can stay healthy he's gonna intercept at least 3 balls this year just dropping into throwing lanes where qbs don't account for him...easy
