matt burke

may have had some problems early in the year, but you got to give him credit called 2 great games, hope he keeps this up, still a young dc, going to make some mistakes still. but hopefully most are in the past

3 games. Reports on the 1st NE Game were the D only saw one play they didn't recognise. It was mental lapses and missed tackles that hurt them. Next game will prove a lot

He was trying to put square pegs in round holes with all of that zone off man coverage. It's hard to give him credit for doing something 11 games too late. If he keeps doing what he should be however and if translates to good play next year then all will be forgiven.

forget the zone and press all game

This. One thousand times this. I honestly wonder if Byron Maxwell not playing as he was assigned to ******* this defense up for a few games, just because he wouldn't do his ******* JOB.

But, to me, that begs the question . . . did Burke want all that Zone or was he following Gase's instructions? Who changed? Burke or Gase?

Either way the coaching has been piss poor on both sides of the ball this season. They might be getting it right now, but it could be too little too late and gase, Burke, etc. Are to blame, but like I said if they're finally figuring it out and the good play continues I to next season then all is good.

In my opinion it was more being a first time dc, and trying to figure out what was going to work best, now is he going to be a good dc, only time will tell but just remember all the great dc once where first time dc and all struggled at first

If you subtract the 5 game losing streak where the defense gave up over 2000 yards, he’s actually has the defense playing well. Not sure if the losing streak is an aberration or is more like what we can expect from an inexperienced DC, such as Burke. There was a recent players only defensive team meeting that seemed to change the fortunes of the team and the perception of the defense. Players were able to clear the air and refocus on the blown assignments that were abundant during the 5 looses. I’m pretty sure Burke will eventually figure it out as the players have now begun to play sounder assignment football. It’s shown over the last 2 games how good the defense can be when they are on point. Allowing an incredible 1-24 conversion rate on 3rd down over the last 2 games is astoundingly good. It’s all because they’ve somehow figured out how to get pressure on the QB once again. It sure seemed like the defense took a 5 week vacation in the middle of a season, but damn they’ve been lights out for 2 straight weeks.

I wonder if Gase had any imput on the defensive changes or if Burke is making adjustments.

Howard, in particular, seems to really excel in more of a man-to-man role. You saw that New England's game plan was to attack the perimeter with short passes and Miami, for the most part, defended that pretty darn well. The Patriots didn't expect to have to throw the ball down the field to have a chance against the Dolphins.

The team still needs to add speed at linebacker, but I do like the way the defense has played recently. Kudos to Burke who has taken a beating on this site at times (myself included).
