For wide receiver Matt Hazel, his second spring as a member of the Miami Dolphins has been about applying the lessons he learned as a rookie in the NFL.
The 2014 sixth-round draft pick out of Coastal Carolina never appeared in a game for the Dolphins last season after being on the practice squad until the final two games, which he spent on the team’s inactive list.
But Hazel used that rookie season as a learning experience, and it has made a difference this spring.
“I feel better, getting a lot more comfortable with just being in the league,” Hazel said. “The first year, a little struggle. Second year, feel a lot more comfortable.
“It’s just really understanding what goes on, the speed, the terminology and really just knowing the playbook. So I feel a lot more comfortable. They’re moving me around a little bit. Knowing the different positions, being able to play full speed, just to grasp it, it’s a lot easier.”
With the overhaul of the wide receiver corps in the offseason, Hazel is one of only three members of the group who ended last season on the active roster, along with Jarvis Landry and Rishard Matthews.
