If Matt Leinart would have came out after his heisman trophy win...our team would be DREMATICALLY DIFFERENT here is my theory...

1) It was a known fact that Saban really liked Alex Smith...If Lienart came out i believe that the 49ers would have taken Lienart and Alex Smith would have been our QB...

2) In the second rould i believe we would have just missed out on JJ Arrington (they picked two picks before us)...And we would have drafted Eric Shelton instead of Matt Roth.

3) I believe we would have really struggled last year with Alex Smith...Everyone would have been pizzzed off but would have given Nick Saban a break calling it a rebuilding year and Alex Smith would have also been given the rookie QB break...

4) The Following draft would have been interesting...Im not quite sure where we would have drafted but i would say we wouldnt have won more than 3 games maybe four...I think we would have missed out on Reggie Bush (thank god) and would have drafted D'Brick and in the second round we would have been in position to take another Runningback since Ricky gets suspended again and probally would have drafted Lendale White...But who knows we may have had the first overall pick in this last draft and could have had Reggie Bush...Good news from some...But ill take Ronnie........

So we would have came into this year with...

QB-Alex Smith Instead QB-Daunte or Joey
RB-Eric Shelton RB-Ronnie Brown
RB-Lendale White RB-Sammy Morris
WR-Chris Chambers WR-Chris Chambers
WR-Marty Booker WR-Mary Booker
WR-Chad Jackson WR-Wes Welker
FB-Darian Barnes FB-Darian Barnes
RT-Vernon Carey RT-Vernon Carey
RG-Hadnot RG-Jeno James
C-Seth McKinney C-Hadnot
LG-Jeno James LG-Shelton
LT-D'Brick LT-McIntosh

So as you can see our team would be much different.....I think we would be worse off...but Saban would have been given a break coming in with a rookie QB...I believe we are better off this year...We need to make a few changes on the Offensive line...We need some one to step in and be a leader for that group...This should be our key this offseason...Get a veteran offensive lineman who will lead this group and it would make all the difference in the world...Thats why i think it was a big mistake not drafting Kevin Mawea this offseason...This is a vetran guy hungry for a ring and would be a great leader for a group that i believe has a bunch of talent just needs some on the field guidance...They proved last sunday against Chicago they can do it...It looked like a different group of guys...But anyways this is my Matt Leinart theory and im sticking to it...And i would just like to say thankyou for staying in school and getting that basketball player pregnant Matt...Our team is better and will be better in the future because of your college hornyness (if that is even a word)

May be fun..

to speculate about such things. But, it also reminds me of one of Grandpa's old saws: If a frog had wings he wouldn't bump his butt when he lands. And if a cow had wings, we'd all be carrying heavy umbrellas.

Was your Grandpa a hillbilly.

Actually, Smith was much less of a target than was made out by the 'press' and there is no way that either Shelton or Arrington (neither of whom have amounted to a thing) would have been considered targets to start longterm.

The real round 2 target was Corey Webster. Roth was a solid 2nd rounder.

But in R1, Ronnie Brown was the man they wanted all along.

Hard to speculate on our second round pick but we probably would take a RB first this year if we had taken Shelton depending on how he turned out. I'm not so sure that Alex Smith would not have been just as good a pick as Ronnie in the long run. The kid looks like a pretty good QB and is doing better than Harrington with lesser weapons. Everyone bashed this kid last year but put Ben Rothlisburger on a bad team and you probably get worse results than Leinhart this year. It would have been nice to be able to move up and take Leinhart this year, just not sure what it would have cost. This guy had top level talent and fell to 11th so it may have been worth it but once we made the Culpepper trade our fate was sealed at QB. The Roth pick would not break us or make us but he does seem to be a decent player. If the draft turnned out the way u suggested I would rather have Debrick, Smith and White and Jackson than Allen, Brown and Roth. We need to improve our line throught the draft. We could have been in decent shape if we had traded down and took Mcneil this year but at least Toledo has somebody to pay for his medical bills for the next few seasons. Final note just because I would rather have the Debrick combo does not equal Ronnie bashing geesh.

it's an interesting discussion to say the least. i thought about it a little while ago myself. hard to say if we would've taken smith or not, although all signs point to "no." still....it's interesting to think about.

No. Just from the South. We have all kinds of 'sayins' down here. Like "Bragging about your parents is like a lizard bragging about being a dinosaur on his Mama's side."

or

"I feel so low I'd have to get a step ladder to scratch a snake's belly!"

You could also speculate that if we could have traded down with Minnesota thus giving them Braylon or Ronnie we could have had an Alex Barron and Derrick Johnson or Shawn Merriman which would not have been too shabby. I doubt that any team made a strong push to move up in one of the perceived weaker drafts to get anybody. . Also no team usually admits that oh yeah he was our second choice, I'm sure Tampa was not going oh yea, we wanted Ronnie Brown all along but we settled for Caddy, its all a shell game. We have no idea who the Dolphin's really wanted because Teams just dont say he was our second choice. We only know that SanFrancsco liked Alex Smith best. The only way we would have known that Ronnie was our top choice was if we had a choice with Smith and Brown and took Brown.

Hey, Boom. Busier than a one legged man in a fanny kicking contest the last two months - and we're not even in Advent yet! That's what comes with revitalizing a congregation, though. It's fun, but not for the faint of heart. We had a young man preach his first sermon last week - things to come, it appears.

I enjoy your insights into players a lot. And I really hope that we can get into a position to get a couple of good OL this time around. The team really needs to invest in that area, to me, more than any other unless we find ourselves in a position to draft a franchise QB, which you still do when there are any questions about the current crop, IMO.

Half of me wants to praise you for an interesting topic.

The other half wants to say the old line about if your grandma had balls she'd be your grandpa!

To address your topic, I actually like the direction we're headed. I believe in Daunte--a healthy Daunte. Alex Smith has shown me nothing.

But I'd take a healthy Alex Smith over a shot Daunte. Time will tell.....

I don't know how good Alex Smith is...of course SF sucks, but I don't know how much is his fault. Frankly, I would rather we had gotten our hands on Matt Leinart.

It's nice to speculate but it's just wishful thinking. I'd actually prefer Leinart over Smith.

As for rookie QB break, I think few on this forum would give him that. We have posters who yell at low round picks Evans and Wright for being a waste of space.
