I think Mat Roth has the potential to be an outstanding OLB opp J.Porter in 09.

I say this as i dont belv he has been given the best oppurtunity to shine in his prev yrs.

I remember the yr after he was drafted many expected big things but injury loss of form, loss of confidence and chg of positions i believe have really effected him.

Late in camp as they were still wrestling with the idea of playing him DE in our system, he had to shed weight to play OLB, and i belv this yr after full pre season work out at OLB he will prove the doubters wrong.

Save, and quote me this time next yr

Roth stats 09 - 70 tackles - 8-10 sacks - cpl of FF

i also think J Allen will have his best yr

I love Roth... I really have since his days as a hawkeye but if he isn't quick enough after some work this offseason then he shouldn't be starting. He may be best served as a situational player. Thats not necessarily a bad thing. In a 3-4 defense the more linebackers and defensive lineman that can play the better the rotation. Matt will see playing time... but most likely in situations where the other team running the football is a certainty. But at the moment it is sort of a wait and see deal... Roth could end up coming into camp at a very lean 265-270 pounds and some quickness we haven't seen from him before. But I still think we need to draft a young, tall, strong, and fast SOLB to push him and be able to rush the passer.

This might sound crazy but what the hell I'll throw it out there. What if we had him in as a lead blocker (FB) in the rushing scheme? I think he could open up some holes in the middle seeing how our 'O' line can't seem to do it. I'm only talking about this in a limited role. If that guy gets a head of steam going forward I can see Ronnie following him right though the gap.

He was playing a new position last year and did a fantastic job. He took over the San Diego game and made alot of drops for losses and a key sack in the game. He's only going to get better playing the position.

LOL

not so crazy - in college he also played FB

but although i wld only poss do it in situational plays, i do belv oe of our biggest needs which nobody mentions is a lead blocker at FB.

Im sure we could make a push for L Neal.

although bit old watching him for ravens at back end of yr e cld still deliver a block and he had limited playing time with baltimore.

what the hell??!!

roth played the role we needed him to last year but doesn't have the speed or edge rush abilities to excel at OLB in the 3-4. i like him but wouldn't be too upset if we got value for him somehow or another.

This has been discussed here quite a few times. I personally believe that Roth is more of a situational linebacker for us and not a guy who takes most of the snaps within the SAM position.

I remember the year he was drafted everyone was disappointed because Saban had missed on his guy Webster and had to fall back on the safety valve that was Roth. He was never any good as a DE in the 4-3 and the only reason he saw playing time as an OLB this last season was because there was noone else. Its always nice to have the effort guys around but a starting OLB in a 3-4 defense needs some athletic ability.

anybody got the breakdown on how well roth sealed the edge this past year?

I thought he did a fine job for his first year at a new position. I haven't been through it with a fine tooth comb though.

Roth is a player that plays with lots of Heart IMO. He kinda reminds me of ZT because people say he is too slow to excel at LB. I think if he could learn another positions, I would give him a shot at ILB only because he is big and has heart. He makes most of his tackles right? I don't think he has missed many and the combination we have with Ayodele and Crowder is a slight disappointment compared with what we were used to in the 4-3 with ZT. Maybe I'm crazy but I like the kid so much that I wouldn't trade him for anything less than a 3rd.

I'd much rather have Zach play free safety.
