So I don't know about you guys, but I'm a little skeptic about this whole thing. I know that the tuna wouldn't let anything wierd go on, but don't you find it strange Roth being an OLB? He's got the muscle obviously but I'm a little worried abuout his speed.

What are your thoughts fellas.

Matt Roth has very short arms. As a DE, this a major problem. He wnds up being easily controlled by longer armed tackles. At OLB, this problem goes away. He winds up taking a lot of TE and RB as a blitzer, and he doesn't need the long arms for that technique. It's a better fit for him.

That said, I don't think he'll be able to cover anyone. But, I don't think he'll be asked to on many plays. I think they'll use him in zone coverage. And I think our safeties will be asked to cover the TE most of the time. But, Roth's primary role will be as a pass rusher and run stuffer. And I think he'll be good at it.

he has looked pretty good in preseason...thats the only thing i have to judge on so far...we will have to see as the season goes on

He is going to be bull rushing fools left and right getting to the QB. Might not have a bunch of sacks, but I believe he will open up plenty of oppurtunities for others.

i dont think he could play the position in a traditional sense but these days what is a traditional linebacker anyway, iam skeptical but hopeful

Im worried about him covering a RB in the flat. He will get his chance if he cant do it they will make a change.

Very true. Is Vrabel really any faster than Roth? Doubt it.
Joey Porter will take JT's place and likely have more coverage responsibility.

He put on weight in the offseason because his size was perceived as a problem when he was end...now that he is moved to LB, he will probably shed the weight he gained, and even loose a bit more. He may not be great this year, but I see him a real good player next year when he as more speed as he loses the weight.

Im all for it. OLBs in the 3-4 are glorified DEs anyway, so it makes sense.

He should be pretty solid against the run. Conventional wisdom would say he could get used at times in the passing game. We'll just have to see.

Roth will be killing backs and TE's with his power bull rush. He will collapse a lot of pockets with his power. He will be much stronger (at a little under 300lbs) against the run than a traditional OLB. He will not be the best in coverage but I doubt he is sent back into coverage very often.

Well...the Jeets are using David Bowens as an ILB so....

I like the fact that they found a way for him to get on the field. Remember he runs a 4.6 40 so he is not exactly slow. He definitely needs to shed about 20 pounds or so and that should help him. I like the mismatch of him rushing against TE's. We'll see tommorow!

yeah now that he is taking on TE's and RB's and with his size he can do some damage in the backfield. he will lose weight during the season and they wouldn't put him out there in passing situations until he is ready. He will do more damage than most think.

Roth ran a 4.81 40 at the scouting combine, and that was when he weighed 263 lbs. He's nowhere near a 4.6. As of about 10 days ago, Roth said that he was down to 274 lbs, so he's on his way to dropping the weight.
