"I'm a big UFC fan, that's been big now and I've been a fan since I was a kid," says Roth, 25, Miami's second-round pick out of Iowa in 2005 who is entering his third season. "I tried Jiu-Jitsu, but if you don't know it you don't want to go in there the first time because you want to be able to tell them to stop, at least the ones who don't know English. So I quit that pretty quick and picked up the boxing."

Roth believes his foot speed has increased as a result of jumping rope and dancing around the ring, which should allow him to get a quicker jump off the line of scrimmage. Since boxing works all of the muscles and helps with conditioning, he sees it as a benefit for any position player and knows of some quarterbacks who have tried it, too.

Sounds like matt is getting ready for the year...And it appears he has gained some weight. The article says he is currently 6'4" 295 lbs.

If Roth is at 295, that would mean he has put on about 20 pounds since his rookie season and if has improved his foot speed as well, then he could be something special at DE.

It does seem like the team is a lot more relaxed this year than in the past couple of years.
"The guy we had before (Saban), he was pretty into every position on the defense and he oversaw the defense, and now you let Dom do his thing and it's less stressful." Roth says. "Having Cam on the offensive side of the ball, he coaches you, he stops practice, he calls the team together and lets you know what's happening, and it's the same thing with Dom and defense. It's not just trying to get as many reps in as you can in a two-hour period; it's coaching, which is great."

ya know. i sure hope roth connects his physicality to his mentality. if he does. oh jesus! this kid would be sick. i still havent quit the dream of hearing.....MAXIMUS......MAXIMUS.....MAXIMUS!!!!!! chanted through out dolphin stadium.:ninja:

The players really seem to love the new presence Cam has brought to the team. I think it is more productive than the yelling and screaming Saban brought to the team. I dont remember the last time I heard the players having so much fun during practices. I think we will see a totally different team in 2007 than in 2005 and 2006...What a complete failure Saban is. Remember hearing one of his QB's quit the team and alabama is having somewhat of a tough time recruiting..

Honestly Matt is the reason we let Carter go. Carter was too expensive as he no longer played every down: because Matt kept stealing his playing Time. The only thing i'm worried about is matt getting tired now that he has a bigger load to shoulder. But, boxing sounds like an excellent way to keep up stamina... Hopefully he'll have his breakout season this year.

One of his QB's did quit. Said something like "I will not give up my dignity"... But bama actually has recruited well this last year. But that still won't help them. They still only split the state with Auburn. To have a chance at a national title they will need top recruiting classes for a few years straight. Bama fans have crazy expectations, but the SEC has gotten CRAZY good since saban left. Lets see him get a Championship now that he has to deal with Urban Meyer, Steve Spurrier, Mark Richt, Tubby tuberville, and les miles. The SEC is stacked!!!

295?? WOW. He is pretty darn big for a D end.

Not in the 3-4. DE's tend to be larger in the 280-300 lb range. This is because they are used more to tie up, linemen than rush the QB. Just check out the DE's for the patriots, Chargers, and steelers. Most are in that weight range...

I don't think you'll have to worry about Roth getting tired for two reasons. Matt is usually one of the most physically fit athletes on the team and he'll be in a rotation with Rod Wright.

If he's gettig bigger and quicker Roth should be a beast this season, he'll be a great compliment to JT and Porter rushing the QB
