Matt Roth Info from a Hawkeye

Everyone loved Cox's intensity, but nobody was sad to see him leave. I'm a strong believer that if Roth wants to have a long career in Miami (which is questionable, we have to foster his loyalty to the organization for him to want to be here), then he will have to focus on not becoming another Bryan Cox.

We say we will accept those kinds of antics as long as he produces, but it will not be so easy to say that the first time he does something completely unnecessary in the 4th quarter of an important game as we're trying to come back or maintain our lead.

This guy sounds like a true SOB on the field. Kinda looks like a Kevin Green in his heydey! Hopefully, he can tear into Feebler in week two. I am soooo praying for a Pennington injury (which goes against my Catholic principles - but F-it - this is Football!!!!).

Greetings fellow Dolphin Fans. I've watched Matt Roth play every down of every game in his career at Iowa, watched over 10 Iowa practices, and have met him on 2 ocassions. I'm originally from Iowa, played D3 college ball, and went to The Univ. of Iowa for grad school. I'm not an expert by any stretch, but I've played enough to know a phenomenal player when I see one.

We got an utter steal with Roth at #46. He is very well coached, very technically sound, and is an absolute animal on the field, practice and game. Matt was the only unamimous 1st Team All-B10 defensive pick by the opposing B10 COACHES... that says a lot. Saban and his staff would have studied a LOT of film on Roth just a few months ago before Iowa played LSU in the Capital One Bowl, so I'm now even more confident in Saban's abilities.

In practice, the Iowa coaches have had to sit him down or ask him to back off, for fear of him hurting our offensive players. He was a champion wrestler (as many of Iowa's players were), and it shows with excellent leverage, use of his hands, and work-ethic.

VERY athletic, ran an electronic 4.74 at the NFL Combine. NFL scouts put a lot of emphasis on hand-size, and only 3 other players at the Senior Bowl had bigger hands than Roth (10.25 inches). He was touted as the most dominant defensive player at the Senior Bowl, and many of the NFL coaches there commented on his excellent technique and abilities.

He IS a bit of a wild-man... has been known to party some. He is a great young man, so I hope the South Florida scene doesn't call him to much!

With our crowded DL, it will be tough, but I would NOT be surprised to see him start sometime during his rookie season... He is that good, and will strike fear in opposing coaches and players. He only started 1 game his Sophomore year and still registered 10 sacks in 11 games!

He was a LB in H.S. and his first year at Iowa.... He can play ILB, but he is most effective with a hand on the ground and rushing QBs. His hand-work and sheer strength make him much better against the run than some scouting reports indicated... he is very good against the run.

The following is a great Matt Roth Video:

Go to "scothawk dot c0m", then "Hawkeye Highlight Videos", then "Tributes", then "Hawkeye Gladiator".

You will love it! Sorry, I can't post the link as I don't have 100 posts?!? Maybe someone can post the link?

Sorry for the long diatribe... I am simply stoked about Roth in Miami... I'd be happy to try and answer any other questions anyone might have about him...

p.s. Ronnie Brown was an awesome pick... an amazing RB with excellent character.... I'm not sold yet on Crowder's character, but his talent is undeniable. I watched Crowder play in person when Iowa played Florida in the 2004 Outback Bowl... He was mouthing off the whole game, and was even talking trash when Florida was down 37-10 in the 4th quarter?!?!... I think Saban will straighten that part out... he is way too good to have to be talking so much... Just my humble opinion... no offense meant to UF fans on here.

More than one of the guys on ESPN thought that if GB hadnt taken Rodgers that Roth would have gone to GB Round 1. He was a steal and I expect him to start for us and bring more of that Seau attitude that we need.

I also like how he does that "clapping of the hands" after he makes a big play. That will also go well with Taylors sig... I can't wait!!! :D
The clapping of the hands isn't his 'sig' he was taunting the Gators with his version of their Gator Chomp (or whatever it is called) as he killed the Gators in the Outback bowl.

I watched him play as I love Big 10 football and I am stoked to have as part of the Dolphins.

MAXIMUS...MAXIMUS....MAXIMUS!!!!
I LOVE IT!!!!
after watching that video of him im so fired up, he looks like a combiation of A J Duhe and Brian Cox....WOW!!!!

Living in Big-10 country, I work with huge fans of several of the big 10 teams, Ohio State and Wisconsin, Michigan, Purdue and Indiana. We were talking about Roth and seems like everyone can remember games where Roth absolutely dominated their team. The Ohio state and Wisconsin fans both said that Roth dominated and killed their QB every time they played against him. This is a good sign of things to come.

Pretty silly even throwing that out, IMO... But, unsubstantiated rumors have to start somewhere, right?

According to his mother he has been a wild man since he was a little kid. He is simply a VERY intense dude.

Iowa randomly tests and monitors for banned substances. The Iowa Strength coach, Chris Doyle, is one of the very best. Roth is simply a product of a football PLAYERS mentality, along with excellent training and nutrition.

It is not by accident that Iowa has had so many players drafted and make NFL rosters the last 3 years. Along with being one of only 4 college programs to finish in the Top-10 each of the last 3 years (the others are USC, Oklahoma, and Georgia), Kirk Ferentz and staff have gained a strong rep in the NFL of putting out NFL ready players. In particular, Doyle's S&C program has made Robery Gallery into a 6-7/325 guy who ran a 4.92 40.... Dallas Clark, a walk-on like Gallery, tested off the charts at the NFL combine before going to the Colts in the first round 2 years ago. He was a 265lb. TE who ran a 4.55 30 and had the fasted 3-cone times of anyone tested, including WRs, CBs, and RBs. Iowa has something special going on, and it is NOT steroids... his name is Chris Doyle.

Dude FloridaHawk, you have the MOST AWESOME sig ever...haha that is so cool.

He did the "clapping of the hands" as you put it, because of the Gators....it's not his sack celebration.

Oh. Well as a Gators fan that makes me sad :(

FloridaHawk,
Thanks for all the good info on Roth. Can you also give some of your opinions of another Iowa player we just signed as a UDFA, George Lewis?

Personally I could do without the penalties, but I must admit I always loved Cox's intensity, and now I hope to see the same with Roth, with a little more intelligence, and self control..... I hope

what's mean Joe up to these days?

roth is going to be a monster once he gets his time on the field. Even better, he's a guy that will talk smack as mentioned earlier... definitely gonna be nice to see him and madison getting people worked up

Mr. Clean, sorry it took me so long to answer your question regarding George Lewis. George was an excellent ILB for Iowa. He isn't huge (6-2/240) or lighting fast (mid 4.6's in the 40), but he is super strong and an excellent defender against the run. He would be best suited on the inside of a 3-4 defense... Decent against the pass, but maybe not at the pro level.

Saban got a close look at him in the Cap1 Bowl, where George tore them up... He hit the starting QB so hard he never returned...

Also, George attended the football factory of Ft. Lauderdale Dillard and was second team all state.
