Maybe i have a man crush on him but alot of people are hating the guy.. hes only played the position for 16 games he came into the season way bigger than he has ever been only to be told to switch positions.. btw i think he made a lot of big run stopping plays this year.. yea flacco carried him hAha but bet he wouldnt let it happen again

I'll be very interested in seeing what kind of shape he's in with a full off-season to prepare for his new position. Roth is one of my favorites on the team because of his hustle and fire out there.

I'm not so sure offseason condition will transform him into a good LB, but he's shown some flashes of being pretty good, I guess, but he's not a gamechanger by any means yet

If he gets lighter during the offseason, he will play better in 2009. Considering what he was asked to do this season at his weight, he performed tremendously well.

He was never going to be a perfect fit as a 4-3 defensive end because of his short arms. He has found a home at linebacker. With more time at the position, I believe he can be a Mike Vrabel-type guy. I hate Vrabel, but he is an excellent linebacker.

Roth should get his weight down to around 260 for the OLB position instead of the 280 he weighed all season.

i agree but you know he bulked up planning on playing defensive end. i think we still have other issues of higher priority to upgrade than roth.

He doesn't flash ability. Never has, at any weight or any position.

Admittedly, the guy makes me sick but I don't understand the flurry of apologists. He had an undeserved reputation coming out of college and has somehow maintained it. Hard trying player but once the speed and athletic ability level rose sharply, Roth doesn't have enough to stand out at this level.

Another offseason isn't going to change anything. Regardless of weight, he's going to be a plodding square built Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robot type, occasionally bumping into someone to cause a tackle. On the overwhelming majority of plays he simply wrestles with the blocker, then moves toward the pile like he's discovered something. It's the most predictable aspect of Dolphin football right now.

I guarantee he's on the upgrade list. It might be true it's not high enough to put him in jeopardy for 2009. But I can hope. :D

I said it many times before. Roth has extremely short arms. That hinders him as much as anything, besides the fact that he does not have the athleticism to be a decent OLB.

I agree. Matt Roth plays like an animal possessed. With the OTA's & spending time to really work on his new position, I'm sure the sky is the limit for him. He's gonna be a Man Beast next season!

GO DOLPHINS!!! SUPERBOWL '10:woot:

I think its hard to evaluate how good or bad our linebackers are until we fix our front line. They have been asked to help the line alot this season. They have a hard time blitzing because the holes dont exist to get through and they are somewhat restricted from dropping back into pass coverages because the line needs their help to produce any pressure on the pocket at all. I dont know if any of our LB's are any good or not. I have a feeling though if we improve our line our LB's will look better then they have this year.

We can't expect Jason Ferguson to be the guy at NT for very many more years. He's starting his 13th season next year and we need to find some big powerful and mobile guy to groom for the starting NT position. Holliday is also getting old so a stout guy who can also rush the passer is needed at his right DE spot.

Matt Roth is beast, someone said it one the ESPN board, but after last season he moved to somewhere and trained at a MMA place all offseason to get ready to play OLB, so after another whole off-season im excited to watch him next year.

You have to like a guy who has a high motor and puts in the amount of effort roth did this year. he played well in coverage and might be decent at stopping the run but to be an OLB in a 3-4 scheme you have to have pass rushing skills and he clearly doesn't have good enough skills in this department. Porter seemed to be fire and ice this year and disappeared the last 2 games because teams put more focus on stopping him. We need a young, talented OLB next year VERY bad and I think we can now see why we chased calvin pace. If we had a pass rush yesterday we would have done much better in slowing flacco.

But in summary, Matt Roth... good guy, plays hard, but doesn't have the speed for special teams and lacks the pass rush skills to play OLB. Even if he drops the weight he just doesn't have enough speed.

I think they only ran it to Roths side twice all game. He does more than you notice, like a shutdown CB who never gets passed on. Offensive coordinators clearly see his skills. You would think the defense could use this to there advantage knowing the run probably won't be at Roth. I noticed in the beginning, they kept moving Roth at the last second, but Baltimore would still run away from him.
