Do you think if we get a new SOLB that Matt Roth could move back to DE and start, i forgot which side he played on but i do remember many flashes of talent at DE and being a LB i believe only would make him a faster, smarter, and all around better football player.

i prefer him at the OLB spot on running downs... he was great for us in that role last season...

people say he did **** for us at OLB because he didn't get the sacks, but he was great playing there in the run game...

Roth seems to stiff in his hips, regardless of pass/run defense. He is intense, solid, strong at the point of attack...I hope he shows huge improvement this year, if not...I think next year his position will be strongly looked at.
Look how well Lamar Woodley transitioned to linebacker...it didn't took long do overall, having a solid season in 2008 opposite Harrison who got plenty of attention.
The one guy I can't wait to see show what he can do is Derek Cameron Wake!

people forget he played OLB last season but spent most of preseason trying to put on weight to play DE. I believe with full pre season at OLB he will be even better ths year and like the idea of him playing first two downs and then being creative with him, porter and wake on 3 rd down passing situations

Agree 100%....he may not have great speed, T-rex arms, but he is relentless, and has a very aggressive/mean side we need on the D.

Tay0365 Your Mock Draft is garbage FYI.....Connor Barwin is a HUGE project pick and I am willing to bet you any amount of money that WE will not pick him in the first round.
However getting Darius Butler with our 1st second round pick would be phenomenal value and i actually agree with you their. Robiskie will go second round FYI.

I don't believe Roth can be a starter in this league...He has physical limitations. When I see him one on one with an O-Lineman, he never beat his guy...He had a few sacks, but in most cases he went untouched or someone forgot to block him..

thinkk that with Holliday released Roth might be move back into the DE rotation , unless we draft another DE that is ...

I think we could trade him for at least a 4th. He is an NFL starter with experience, but at the same time he is still young and dirt cheap.

There are a lot of teams moving to the 3-4 this year and almost all of them are still short on personnel.

Teams like GB,KC,Denver,Cleveland, and there are also a lot of teams that may consider using him as end in the 4-3.

The draft has few prototypical DE's this year. Most of the good ones are really undersized.

Tyson Jackson,Jarron Gilbert,Sammie Lee Hill; the rest are like 260 and under.

I think Roth has some trade value.

nfortunately i dont thinkrot could ever start at DE, unless its maybe running downs.. his arms are way to small to rush a passer with his hands in the dirt

he played well at OLB this year.. i like him there.. i just wish he could grow his arms out a lil longer.. but yeah we already have 2 starters at DE in langford and merling

Zack had short arms (ans was short too) but played very smart and with great intensity. Roth just needs to play a bit smarter because he has the ability and the determination.

I always thought Matt Roth was a strong side defensive end, a 4-3 guy who won't get 10+ sacks a season but will be able to hold up against the run. I never thought he was a good fit at any position in a 3-4 and I really don't know how he made it through a whole season at solb without getting blown upin coverage. But he is too small to play DE in a 3-4

In his previous time at DE, we've already learned that he cannot hold the point of attack against an OT, and his arms are too short to be an effective pass rusher. He did ok at OLB, where he could often match up with the TE instead of a lineman. But, his lack of speed will prevent him from ever being a good OLB. On the times when he did not set the edge, his lack of speed was a major problem, because he had no chance of recovery and it led to big runs against us. He also has no ability in coverage. The coaches did a good job getting something out of him last year, but I'm sure they are planning on getting him out of the starting lineup.
