I've only seen 5 games this year and haven't really seen Roth much because I don't have them on tape to go back and look at.
I have read articles that say he is a good run stopping force.
The reason for the thread is that it has been a while since I have seen one about him and wanted to get a feel for the opinions of people who have watched him and or focused on him when he comes in.

He doesnt play enough for us to really form a true opinion on him

Mine is obviously at this point in his career he isnt good enough to be a starter or saban would have him out there more

Makes sense. He is not as good as Holliday, Carter, Taylor and Bowens at this point

I'm almost certain at this point Matt Roth is a project, and is being asked to bulk up, but is not so much of a project that he cannot rotate as a 4-3 closed end/3-4 DE

when he's in we're better against the run, but our pass rush suffers.

Think of fellow Hawkeye DE, Aaron Kampman. Good against the run, and a high energy guy, but not a developed pass rusher

Roth is not getting playing time because of two Guy named Bowens, and Taylor that are starting in front of him. Roth would have to be some kind of super hero to come in and start in front in front of these guys his rookie year. Playing behind these guys will only make him a better player.

Anyone one think he could be a Boulware type OLB in our more 3-4 fronts?

Carter and Taylor, Bowens is the 3rd DE rotated in.

But yeah, those guys are all proven pass rushers (along with Zgonina who also sees some time on the end).

Roth is usually a DE when we play 3 down linemen, or he rotates between DE/DT for containment.

As I've said all year, he is not a pass rusher. He'll get there, but right now he's one of our best against the run.

Aren't both of them Pro Bowlers??

haven't seen him enough, but I've heard people say he'd be possibly a LB, or a DE LB hybrid. But maybe, depending on what Saban does about getting another LB (depending on who's available) Roth could get his first shot as a LB on this team.

Thanks for the feedback. I wish I could have seen more of him too, but I thought when we drafted him he could be a monster pass rushing OLB in different alignments. The intensity and will seems to be there with him, hopefully it translate into on the field success.

yeah, but you said Bowens

If he was a pass rusher like Boulware/Suggs yeah, but he's not so if he moves to LB it will be OLB in a 4-3 or ILB in a 3-4

IMO, from what I've seen and read, no... He doesn't have the speed to be an extremely effective pass rusher in a two point stance. To be a Boulware, you must also present, at the very least, a threat that you will drop into coverage (or else what's the point of having that 4th LB - you would just have 'em fire off out of a 3 or 4 point stance every play). I think Roth lacks is agility which is the secret, and very telling trait, of an effective cover guy

I wonder if he's having trouble adjusting to the NFL. By that I mean I wonder if his speed and strength are not on an NFL level just yet. He does have one heck of a motor.
