I see that Max Starks (Steelers) is a Transition free agent. I have always liked him. Can anyone please tell me what transition means? What would we have to give to get him? Does he fit the Parcells/Sparano type of lineman?
Thanks for the help. :D

I THINK that all it means is, if we sign him, they can match, but if they dont, they get no compensation.

Im pretty sure its similar to Hutchinson and John Tait in the past. Also, with "poison pills", its easy to ensure a team doesnt match. E.g., in the case of Pittsburgh, 'must be highest paid tackle on the roster', but they have Marvel Smith.

Kind of surprised he hasnt attracted more interest, but he does have a knee issue.

I think you hit it rite on the dot; but as you know its going to be an steep price for starks probably a 2nd rounder or 1st

With a transition FA there is no compensation. It just gives the original team the right to match ;)

Kind of stupid putting a transition tag on him when for like $500k more, they could've franchised him. Whats $500k more when you're already willing to pay almost $7mil for the transition tag?

Perhaps the team is holding off to make Jake Long appear to be a possibility in the draft?

Think about it, if we signed Starks and traded JT, you could BANK on the pick being Chris Long.

I doubt it. We'd have to bid higher than the Steelers and then hope they don't match. I don't think Parcell's and Co. want to shell out that much money for a guy who has so many question marks.

Whats a poison pill

It's a clause in the contract. The Vikings started it with Steve Hutchinson. In this case, lets say we give an offer for Starks. The steelers would have the right to match our offer. We could put writing in the contract that if he plays 4 games in Pittsburgh in one season, the entire contract would be guaranteed. That way we know the Steelers won't match the offer and would also receive no compensation. Just a way of screwing other teams over. The Steelers could've avoided anything like that if they would've gave Starks $500k more to franchise him. I'm guessing they don't think anybody will pay Starks the kind of money it would take to get him.

The league frowns upon that so Bill won't do it.

You think for a second that Parcell's cares if he pisses off the league? I don't. If the league doesn't want poison pills, they should ban them. Until then, who cares if they frown upon it?
