I wonder if the FO has considered this since they seem to have more play makers on the DLine instead of LB. I know the vogue thing in the NFL is the 3-4 and that most teams have or are switching to it. But it seems to me with the personel they have in place now going 4-3 would make better sense.

Either way, we still need to draft a LB

If u draft/sign the right LB's, we can run the 3-4.

I can't for the life of me understand why this question keeps coming up. Has Parcells ever ran a 4-3??? You can't just change overnight. It takes 3-4 years to get the right personnel to fit a scheme.

We will NOT be moving to a 4-3

It is not out of the question, and we do run a few 4 DL sets. If anything a hybrid would be more realistic, but to run a straight 4-3, u r right, we don't have the right personnel, and it would take atleast 2 or 3 years to get it.

Yea we have 2 gap personel...

We are not moving to a 43

Its harder to find a real 43 de than OLB's

Yeah changing the defensive scheme every year is a recipe for failure. We need to draft a couple of LB's and a Safety and our defense will be in good shape.

The 3-4 is basically a 5-2 the way we run it. Porter and Taylor rarely drop back in pass coverage and so are basically just rush ends. In my opinion we are maxing out our talent right now by using the 3-4.

First I agree 100% that I don't think Parcells would run a D that didn't center around a 3-4 scheme. However they did run the 4-3 at times.

I do disagree that are personnel does not fit a 4-3. We have 2 former DT's in Starks and McDaniel. These guys would be great in a 4-3 front. It is MUCH easier to find DT's than a NT. As for ends Langford and Merling would work fine in a 4-3. You have Dotson as well as Moses that could play DE as well as JT. Throw in Wake possibly and that isn't a bad lineup considering you have a whole offseason to add to it.

The 3-4 is misleading because Porter was basically an undersized end every down. When did he ever drop back into coverage. Very rarely.

Good post, only thing that sucks is how bad Porter and JT were at it at times. Some 4-3 fronts definitely wouldn't hurt IMO, I think Wake would do some serious damage at DE in a 4-3. idk who would play the other DE though, and we still don't have 3 LB's who could play in that scheme with any success.

Consider almost all of our LB's are crap switching to the 4-3 would be relatively painless.

However it ain't happening Parcells is gonna run the 3-4, end of story.

Sucks though as 15 teams are switching to the 3-4 thus meaning very good 4-3 personal are going to be cheap and plentiful.

The point above is that it does not take 3 to 4 years, because we have personel now to go back to 4-3.

The second point is that it does not take 3 to 4 years to switch because we did it in 1 year last year essentially. We switched to 3-4 with Capers in 2007 when we went 1-15. A lot of players were gone and in 2008 we went to playoffs with new 3-4. And going to 3-4 from 4-3 is a much harder switch.

Those 4 DL sets are most likely nickel and dime situations

It is much easier to find 4-3 personal then 3-4 ones. Add that to the fact that more teams are moving to the 3-4 and the special players you need will be harder and hard to find.

You have to find college DEs that can move to OLB and they are rare. YOu have to find great NTs and they are rare.

I like being able to rotate 7-10 guys on the DL like we did when Saban was here. This is also how the Giants beat the Patriots in the SB.
