So throughout preseason it has been said that Dan Carpenter was in a position battle with Conner Barth or whatever his name is. But here we have a rookie who was 21/25 (not sure if this is right) but was he really in a position battle who knows didnt think they would change but then again im probably the only one who cares about kickers but hey they are important too games can be decided by FG but i want everyone's opinion. I just think he really had to stink up the place in preseason to lose his job

Word was that Carpenter wasn't performing well in practice so they brought in some competition. That's all he needed to shape up and find his 2008 form. He has looked better in the preseason games and has rightfully kept his job.

cool i didnt know this so that explains it

We do need an upgrade on kickoffs, his touchback percentage is horrible.
He is 1 for 7 this preseason. He does seem to be getting good disatance this year so far. The problem is Barth is not an upgrade in that department

No question about it, we need someone that can perform on kickoffs, or hit a 50+ FG in a clutch situation. Carpenter's leg sucks, although it is accurate inside the 40.

Carpenter was absolute money last year in games. I'm not gonna dispute that he may have stunk in camp, but the dude nailed his FG's in the preseason (except for that one weird snap on the infield in the rain I believe) but except for the fact that his leg isn't strong on kickoffs, he was an absolutely exceptional kicker last year and you don't get rid of guys like that.

I wonder why we haven't tried the punter (can't remember his name) on kickoffs.

I didn't pay enough attention last year to his kickoffs to know how far they consistently went but in this preseason, they seem to be very close to the goal line every time. Seems ok to me. I know that isn't vintage Mare, but might be an improvement over last year.
