IMHO, both CB and OG are positions where you can find players in every round. That's not true of positions like DE and OT. But, we happen to have glaring holes at OG and CB. We have demonstrated zero ability to draft mid-round OG's because our scouts are looking for the physical traits feet quickness and length at the expense of technique and power. The reality is that you need a certain amount of all 4, and technique is the most important part. Thus, we keep getting the John Jerry, Dallas Thomas, Billy Turner and Jamil Douglas types who look great at the combine, but never seem to do well enough at offensive line. We can't just wait until the 3rd through 5th rounds to select an OG. Einstein's definition of insanity was doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results ... so let's not wait too long to draft OL unless we hire new scouts please.
Fortunately for us, the OG market starts at the very end of round 1 or the beginning of round 2 with Cody Whitehair. That's when we should be in the OG market IMHO, at the top, where those OG's do not have fundamental flaws in technique and power but are still on our scouts radar with good feet and length. So, to me, the 2nd round where we pick #6 is one definite spot to pluck an OG unless a huge talent falls into our lap ... and I don't see may of those in this draft honestly.
Vance Joseph is the DB whisperer. He really got the best out of all the DB's he coached, from safeties like Iloka and Nelson to troubled head cases like Adam Jones to talented but unpolished youngsters like Dre Kirkpatrick ... they all played their best football under him, they all lived up to their potential, and they all raved about how great he was. They loved him, they would go to war for him, and they reached their potential. So, it makes the most possible sense to give him 1 or 2 very talented youngsters to groom so he can develop them into excellent football players and become the base of our defense for years to come. Also, if we are terrible, he will be gone, so the sooner he starts teaching them the better. If we are surprisingly great, he'll get head coach offers and be gone ... soooooooo the sooner he starts teaching talented youngsters the better. So, to me, CB should be the very first pick and it shouldn't be a polished gem like Hargreaves (whom I really think is awesome and the best CB in this draft), but rather it should be a less polished guy with high upside ... exactly like Eli Apple or William Jackson. We traded down because it appears we are targeting exactly that type of player at CB.
While there will be tempting players at every selection, I really believe we need to stay the course, select the right CB for Joseph at #13 (1st) and a complete technician OG at #42 (2nd). We can probably trade down a little in the 1st, but by #25 the run on CB's will be in full force and we may miss out, so we can't trade down much. IMHO, we cannot trade down in the 2nd round because we need to stay right on the front of that OG pool. Our scouts need to be selecting in the premium OG market to not completely blow the pick .... again.
