McDaniel - Funny? Silly? Childish?

Anyone want to use AI to make McD look dressed like Tom Landry and say that? RIP

So essentially you’re questioning whether he can just be a regular human being?
Not the biggest McD fan here but give him a break already on stupid **** like this. Hes injecting a little humor into the situation

Agree.

Trying to sum up McD in 1 word is tricky. I keep vacillating between quirky & unique.

Tom Landry. A throwback even then. The last guy to wear a full suit and fedora on the sideline of every game - whether it was 30 below or 110 degrees.

He and Shula had to be the last 2 head coaches in the league to coach each game without a headset permanently attached to their heads. I would love to hear both of them talk about coaches these days. No collared shirts, trolling opponents, etc. lol

Coaches do this all the time. Bill Belichick used to rib his former players on other Teams during games.
Really? I will have to search out that video. I always viewed him as having the personality somewhere between a tepid, wet rag on the field to an old curmudgeon at his press conferences. Who knew the guy actually had a sense of humor when he wasn't spying on other teams illegally?

I don't know what to make of this? I think when the team is winning and good, one might find it funny. When they are losing, one might find it childish, annoying, and inappropriate. The LOL at the end too, not a good look. I don't think it is ever a good idea to tweak the other team's best player. And personally, I do not think you want a head coach to behave this way. Maturity and setting a tone and culture is important from the team's leader.

As much as I agree with your opinion, life is different nowadays. Everyone is a troll. Very difficult to find many people who have that level of maturity when trolling is now an accepted reality, even from those in positions of power.

At the end of the day, as long as it's done while winning, who cares? I might suggest waiting until the team's over .500 before talking crap, but no fun in that. lol

They wore suits once. We’ve sure come a long way.

We’ve got bigger problems, though. & as stated, it’s all relative. If we were leading the division…

I haven't made my mind up about him
i agree. it is complicated. plus only year 3. on one hand, you can say he will learn on the job. on the other hand, head coach isn't really meant to be an apprenticeship position. but it is what it is now. the way i think about it is how does he do, and then to the degree there are certain things he needs to be better at, does he learn and address them and change? the latter is not fully clear to me, yet.

The problem with that behavior is that it puts him at the level of the players instead of at the level of head coach, which undermines his stature as a leader of men and the leader of the team. He can't be taken seriously as a leader of men when he's placed himself at the players' level with his own behavior.

Imagine being down at the half in a playoff game and having someone who behaves like that try to galvanize the team with an impassioned halftime speech. It can't possibly have the intended effect when he's undermined his own stature as a leader of men with this kind of behavior. You can't galvanize a group of men in the aggressive game of football when you've already established yourself as a silly comedian in their eyes.

that is my concern. i tend to lean in your direction. we need to see how the players respond and act, when the going gets tough and against better teams. honestly, i just do not know what to make of all of this, but am concerned and think there is some maturation that may need to continue to happen.

We already know how the team responds when the going gets tough and against better teams, and it isn't good. And this is why -- the team culture is driven by a silly amateur comedian. If we were playing pickleball or cornhole that might work, but it doesn't work in professional football.
