McDaniel - Funny? Silly? Childish?

Mike Tomlin is not a great coach. He’s been riding the coattails of the system Cowher built and the exceptional personell department of the Steelers for years. He’s also a cheater. As is Bilichick, who wasn’t **** without Brady. Shula, Landry and Lombardi??? They were coaching at their best more than half a century ago. Tony Dungy a great coach? His biggest success was getting hired to coach the team Chucky built. Andy Reid didn’t win a Super Bowl until he got Mahomes, and his commercials aren’t exactly the most dignified things I’ve ever seen.

Molds are meat to be broken. History is littered with people who were absolutely ridiculed and ostracized by the establishment and conventional wisdom for daring to be different, and who, in the end, were supremely successful.

If McDaniel wants to make jokes and have fun on the sidelines, who are we to judge him for it, especially when he is wining?

Who are your examples of great coaches today then?

Winning? We have a losing record.

Let me know when "being different" wins championships.

Lets try this.....

Imagine going into the locker room at the half down on the scoreboard in a playoff game and having that guy try to give an impassioned speech that rallies the team. He can't possibly be taken seriously. He might as well let somebody else do it.

What an awful take

Are you ****ing kidding me? I've coached over 20 years now and if you don't think there are multiple ways to reach players you are foolish and ignorant.

Did I tell you you all about the fiery speachs I made at halftime when I was coaching the 10 to 12 year old flag football team at greens creek Baptist church.

It can be true that there are multiple ways to reach players, and also true that some ways of reaching players aren't effective. I'm not saying there is only one way to reach players -- what I'm saying is that McDaniel's particular way isn't effective.

i think he is kind of a clown, but this is really good:

The thing about Sanders is that he has a tremendous degree of street cred with players when he speaks to them because of his history of greatness as a player. McDaniel doesn't have anything like that. So McDaniel has to err on the side of seriousness so he can be taken seriously.

Spot on! There are SO MANY different styles and techniques.

Here is from the last two wins, they are OK, he is not a very good speaker, everything he says starts with "I". but I would love to see his locker room speaches from the first 5 games.

Now this guy is what we need, all about team and "US" and "We" the man is insperational.

The issue with McDaniel's speeches isn't what happens during the speech or in what he says -- it's the way his speeches are experienced by his players, which is determined by his general demeanor. If your general demeanor is that of a silly and sort of immature amateur comedian, it'll be hard to take you seriously no matter what you say.

His general demeanor is completely incompatible with giving speeches of that nature. You simply can't be a silly immature amateur comedian in general and then flip a switch and speak to a room of 50+ professional football players and suddenly have the presence, command, and gravitas necessary to impact them in the intended way. They're too busy experiencing you as a kind of cartoon character, and everything you say and do will be seen and experienced through that lens. It makes the entire effort completely ineffective.

Now imagine that a speech of that nature is given at halftime of a playoff game when you're down on the scoreboard. The speech then fails to galvanize the team in the intended way because it's being experienced by the players as delivered by a cartoon character. You might as well have Pee Wee Herman come in and give the speech.

Campbell is great. This is him when he was with us. Shame we let him get out of here. Team looked good when he was interim coach too:
