It's human nature to give up after you realize that even your best efforts aren't good enough to change something. Smith is probably the worst starting lineman in the NFL. He played only ONE YEAR at left tackle in college, and it was a small college at that. What do you think these other players are thinking, realizing that they're playing with someone who doesn't even BELONG ON THE FIELD?

Go watch a pickup basketball game where a bunch of adults are playing with one kid about 10 years old. Every adult on the team will play softer than they usually do because they know they have a weak link they can't compensate for no matter HOW hard they play.

You just said it in a nutshell. What do you think James is gonna do when he's constantly realizing he HAS to block 2 people to make the offense run?

that's if you're an amateur. These are professionals.

Zach Thomas cannot control what other players can or cannot do but he can sure keep playing his best which he has done all these years.

If what you say is true, the Miami Dolphins should represent the U.S. in the next Olympics in the basketball tournament. They were professional primadonnas playing for themselves and not as a team. If that is the case as well then Wanny has failed as a coach .

My Zach comment applies to this. When Brady came in to replace Bledsoe, did the entire Pats team give up on their lowly drafted back-up qb in Brady? They got better didn't they. Antwain Smith was average at best, did their OL give up opening holes for him?

But what if the coach has somehow put an amateur on the field, and all the players know it but the coach doesn't? How do you think the players are gonna react, especially when the amateur is at one of the most important positions on the field?

Sure Zach can and should keep playing his best, but it's human nature to stop giving your best when you've given your best only to see someone else undermine it.

Either way they are porfessionals and they play hard no matter who's next to them. Or at least they should.

Your Zach analogy has very little to do with the O-line, except they they both play for the same team.

The O-line is supposed to be 5 guys working together. Zach is supposed to do HIS job.

I wonder how well Zach could do if he had the DT letting opposing linemen get their hands on him?

If they play like idiots other teams won't pick them up once they get cut and miss out on million $$$ paychecks.

Not the same...bad analogy.

Obviously the other players are going to allow the kid to play well to boost his self confidence. How are you going to feel dunking on a 10 year old as an adult??

Right, but I'm not talking about noticeable drop-offs in play. I'm talking about leaving the huddle thinking, "jeesh -- THIS play probably won't work -- it's going to Smith's side." You think you're getting these guys' BEST effort when they leave the huddle thinking that?

You missed my point. The point is, if every player should play their best regardless of what the other is doing and not give up because one player sucks. Zach is part of a unit and was an example and not an analogy.

Zach is also dependent on the DT doing their assignments so he can run freely and make tackles. Do you think he gives up when the DT miss their assignments?
