A number of the writers reporting on the McKinney surgery story have said they expect the Phins to put McKinney on IR. If his agent is correct and he will be back in two months, three at the outside why not PUP?

I thought PUP kept a guy on the sidelines for six weeks and then let hoim workout for up to two before a decision is made whether to IR him for the year or activate him. Looking at the schedule we have a bye in week 8 which would be a perfect time to evaluate McKinney.

Maybe they think they're stocked on the interior line and/or can find an adequate replacement on the free agent market or waiver wire.

They probably won't have to pay all of his contract if he goes on IR. If I recall, McKinney recently signed a hefty $2 million deal. I say hefty because I think he sucks.

Even if he gets back in 6 weeks chances are he wont be ready to play, and wont be in shape

So the IR makes sense

its not a big deal, Toledo was beating him out for the job anyway.

pretty sure you have to be placed on it before training camp...

LOL here ya go... LINK

If a player begins training camp on the PUP list, they can be moved to the active roster at any time, even after one practice. A player is not allowed to be placed on the PUP list if they start training camp on the active roster.

Let's see. McKinney will be out for 2-3 months. That leaves him returning in late October, or maybe even mid-November. That's Strike 1. If he would rteturn, he'd be out of practice for however long he was out for and would have poor chemistry with the rest of the offensive line, poor timing and would need to shake off the potential rust off his game. By that time of the year, the Dolphins will be closing in on a Division Title and a very crowded competition for the two Wild Card spots. Good move. It gives McKinney a full year's worth of rest and won't risk further injuring himself. I mean, guys can be cleared to play but aren't always 100%. Example: Will Poole. I know everyone is familiar with him and his unfortunate situation.

May not seem like a big deal now but Toledo has not played in even an actual preseason game yet and has quite a injury history to overcome. I still think bennie Anderson will be the starter or maybe Carey may move back inside if no one impresses.

Saban likes using the IR almost like a redshirt is used in college. The only thing here is that McKinney is a veteran so I don't really see that being the case. I don't think McKinney was going to start any way.

Thank you, that was the part of the puzzle I didn't have.

McKinney's deal was for two years but the second year was fairly high which made everyone suggest that it was in actuality a one year deal with an option if he had done well. What happens now is a question.

the evidence of most football players who have this surgery shows that they have less then a 10 percent chance of ever playing again if they are interior lineman, the recovery time is six to eight months, the nerve tissue will take a year to heal, he is finished

My paper (Sun Sentinel) said this morning he WASN'T put on IR, rather PUP. Are they wrong? It said they put him on PUP because they expected him to be able to play in November. I doubt he would though, as you guys point out he'll be out of shape and off-kilt with the rest of the OL. Wonder which is true, PUP or IR?

LOL!! :sidelol:

Mckinney can't go on the PUP list. It violates NFL rules.

Unless a player starts Camp on the PUP list he is not elligable to be on the PUP list during the season. And if a player is taken off the PUP before the season starts they cannot go back on.

So the only options are:
1. IR
2. Keep him on the roster the rest of the season but inactive.
3. Cut him, resign him later. (Very doubtful cause of the $$$)
