From what I understand.... WANN-SPIEL pretty much made up their minds about 2 weeks ago....that they were just going to shop McNOWN around the league, to gauge any interest.
Obviously---CADE is from the West Coast (UCLA) and his game literally cries out as well...for a team using the west-coast style of offense.
Thus...it did not take any time at all for RICK SPIELMAN to get on the phone and talk to the man who once recruited McNown---and that was indeed 49er GM, and former UCLA coach...TERRY DONAHUE.
This is a trade that basically came down to the DOlphins just wanting to go in another direction...after fully evaluating CADE since last years trade with the BEARS. MIKE SHULA did all he could with McNOWN...who was a model citizen in and out of camp...since he has been here. But what it came down to...is that CADE made NO IMPRESSION with new OC...NORV TURNER. NORV had seen enough of CADE in these ealy camps to tell all around him.....that CADE was just not suited for his style of offense. The mechanics of Mcnown was obvious to all as well.....as his 3/4 sidearm delievery was just not suited for a quick drop and release....and when Mcnown did throw the ball downfield....more often than not....those balls were flutters....not the darts that Norv is looking for.
Nobody really counted on newcomer TIM LEVCIK to make an impression at these recent camps....but that is exactly what did happen....and that really set the trade mechanisms going in the first place. The Dolphins thinking is that they will just see what they can do with LEVCIK first.....and give him the necessary snaps in these upcoming camps...to really see what he can do. If CADE was still on the camp roster....it would have inhibited the reps of LEVCIK....and now the case is this: The Dolphins want to give LEVCIK the opportuntiy to win this third string job.... they really see a big, strong guy...who has a real good deep ball....and a pretty good head on this shoulders. From what I have seen in camp.....the guy is certainly not confused or misplaced in this system...as CADE certainly was.
This trade was a great move by the Dolphins....because they at least got something for him now.....most teams would have said no for now....knowing that the DOlphins would probably release Mcnown outright in the near future. It made sense for SPIELMAN to act now...right before the real camp starts....and make a decision on CADE....now the DOlphins can either go into the direction of LEVCIK---or...at the very least....if LEVCIK does not pan out....then they could also go into another direction....and that would be to pick up another veteran QB...that would serve as an insurance policy if RAY LUCAS did decide to leave as a FA next season. The trade of CADE just gave the DOlphins a look at a guy they think they can develop....or a guy that they will seek out if the LEVCIK experiment does not work out. In conlusion: I really like the quick decision on the trade....knowing that CADE was not going to be playing football at all....this year...as a member of the MIAMI DOLPHINS.
ANd just one other note: I know the release of COREY MOORE...the LB...came as a bit surprise by some people. However....MOORE is just too small....he is physically not strong enough to play everyday as a LINEBACKER....this is what the Dolphins were thinking. He was going to be make this team on special teams....but with both GALYON and RUSSELL there....MOORE was really just going to be inactive anyway. He was just caught in the numbers game.....and the DOlphins just wanted to release him...early...so he can try and hook up with another team. He would have never played on this football team....except for special teams...and we are just loaded with enough talent there already.
