Miami Dolphins: GRADE: B-
Jake Long fills a need at left tackle, and I liked Bill Parcells' selection of Clemson DE Phillip Merling with the 32nd overall pick because he's solid against the run. The pick of Chad Henne in the second round tells you Miami is not sold on John Beck; however, I'm not sold on Henne. He has accuracy issues and a long delivery and he isn't mobile. I do like his toughness and he does have some of those intangibles you look for in a quarterback. Defensive end Kendall Langford is a big body, but I thought he was somewhat of a reach after an average senior season. Shawn Murphy really came on as a guard and he could battle for a starting spot. Jalen Parmele was a workhorse at Toledo, a big running back who also has some speed. And Lionel Dotson was a good seventh-round pick who should be able to help at nose tackle.

Fair grade . . . probably one of the more accurate draft grades that I have seen.

Anything from the A+ to the B- range is fair. His is on the low end because of the dislike towards Henne and what he feels to be a reach on Langford.

However the team probably ranks their draft an A+ . . . because they LOVED Henne and Langford.

That's on the low end of my personal rating spectrum on our draft, but,
it's fair because of Kipers personal opinions on certain players.

I'm happy with a B- after a bunch of messed up drafts :)

I think that's about right, although I'm not nearly as high on Merling as he is. I think we reached for Merling when there was a lot of talent on the board and that's the pick that stings the most. I also don't see that Henne is the answer and we could have gotten a good player there as well, so it was unsurprising but also uninspiring. I actually like Langford, but I agree we drafted him higher than we should have.

All in all there were a ton of good CB's we could have had and we didn't take any of them. To me, that's our draft's biggest failing. We need another starting caliber safety, but there simply weren't any in this draft. I would have preferred that we use a couple picks in the 2nd to 4th range on a TE/WR and a CB. Oh well, I guess we did a great job this offseason rebuilding the OL, so I shouldn't complain too much.

The thing that people are forgetting to mention is that we also picked up a starting TE and ILB with our 4th rounder.
All in all, we have solidified at least 5-6 starting positions (LT, 2xDE, TE, ILB, LG) in one draft. Pretty decent if u ask me.

We did get some starters this draft. I hate to say this, but I'm with Mel on the Henne pick. (man, that hurt agreeing with him). Overall we did well. And if the running back Parmele (or someone else) does better then we think, even better.

Like Sh4nty...I too like McShay better.

merling was not a reach

how is it a reach if multiple mock drafts had him going in the teens or early 20's....sports illustrated had him going to redskins at 21....

First off, I am SOOOOO glad we drafted Jake long #1 . . . was there even another tackle taken in the next 3 rounds after Duane Brown? The tackle pool was completely depleted . . . and all the talk about taking one at 32 . . . lol . . . that would have been the REACH of the draft. We got the best of the group and filled the biggest need.

I strongly disagree with Merling being a reach . . . I think he will be great in this defense . . . tho I could be wrong . . . I know you do your homework on alot of these guys and you are much more knowledgeable than the majority of the people on this board . . . I think he was an absolute STEAL at 32. Just look at his size . . . he is MADE for the 3-4. He may not start right away . . . but you can't pass up that kind of value and talent . . . Parcells must have been licking his chops on that pick . . . kind of like Jerry with Felix Jones. Don't feel bad . . . we may have drafted Henne here if Merling did not fall.

I agree with the Henne pick to a certain extent . . . I didn't think we needed to draft a QB on the first day . . . but it feels good knowing the FO wants to solve this problem by bringing in a guy they really like and having these guys compete. I can't knock them for that. I would probably be more heated if Sweed made it to 54 and we passed on him.

Langford may have been a reach . . . who knows . . . but we can all agree the kid has the talent to be a stud in the 3-4. We possibly should have drafted Godfrey here . . . and try to trade back up in the 3rd round to get Langford . . . but maybe they knew another team liked him and just wanted to be safe . . . maybe they didn't like Godfrey.

And I like both of the Guard selections . . . 2 raw guys who may end up being great players in the NFL . . . especially the kid out of UConn. Have all 3 compete . . . possibly bring in a vet if need be for this year . . . and just wage battle at RG/LG . . . u know Smiley has one locked down . . . its gonna be a war in camp.

The running back selections are intriguing . .. but the 2 guys they drafted seem to be perfect for what the team wants to accomplish . . . and lets face it . . . Cobbs is not gonna be on this team, Booker was traded . . . Ricky is one mistake from a lifetime ban and Ronnie is comming off of an ACL . . . we weren't as deep as many people think we were.

The icing on the cake was the L-Train pick in round 7 . . . very nice pick . . would like to see the kid stick on this DLine.

Combine that with getting a potential starting TE and a MLB . . . this was a very good draft for Miami . . . hopefully you come around on the Merling pick . . . I see 6'5 280 and 4.6 40 yard . . . and I get the chills.

B+ from me . . . we need a young CB . . . but outside of the Flowers pick . . . guys like King, Godfrey, Lee and Molden were just OK . . . we will get that CB next year. Also wanted to grab one of those WR's in the second round . . . but its cool . . . we will bring Bess in as a UDFA . . . and he should stick. Next year I think we address the skill positions.

This guy has been horrible ..... His prediction of draft have been correct less than 20% in the first round and after that he is less than 2% correct.

he was pissed as players he rated high were going low and low grades were selected high.He was doing a backpedalling a tonne.

Well I will take a B- over a F- or D- which is what we have had the past few seasons under Cam, Saban, and Wanny.

sounds like a fair, accurate grade/analysis of our picks. anybody who says that hes wrong about what he said about Langford and Murphy are kidding themselves because you know damn well you have not watched those guys play, not once. Mel Kiper might not be the almighty draft guru...but he sure knows a hell of a lot more than i do.

By no stretch am I going to draw this comparison but Marino wasn't mobile either in the classic sense.

I think the ability to sense pressure and move in the pocket has more value than the ability to run.

Let's use the extremes Marino -vs- Vick - which was one more mobile? Which one was a better quarterback?

Yea but Marino had the GREATEST pocket presence in the history of the NFL . . . and possibly the quickest release . . . he made his linemen look great (not a knock on Webb . . . but it helps having Marino as your QB to get to all those Pro Bowls that he got to).

That is a very extreme example. We could do Chad Henne or Steve Young . . . and Steve Young is better . . . he was more mobile. Potato or Potatoe

Good points as usual KDawg954. I definitely agree with you about all the OL decisions. Sure, I would have preferred McGlynn (taken 2 picks ahead of Murphy), but these are solid prospects and Jake was a great pick and Smiley was a great FA acquisition. No complaints there.

I think we must be looking at Starks as a potential NT to have gone so high to get 2 guys who are clearly 34 DE's. I thought we were looking at Starks as a DE, and would have been quite happy with Red Bryant, or a late pick of Frank Okam or Ahtyba Rubin, but Langford and Merling definitely have less bust potential.

I don't think Bess will make the team. Neither Henne nor McCown are accurate enough to hit someone as small as Bess, who I firmly believe is only 5'9. If Beck were the QB, Bess might have a shot to make the team. Barring a tremendously better camp by Beck than Henne, this administration is going to go with it's own hand-picked QB, so I think Beck is in a rough situation.

Merling and Langford fill a position of need. We didn't have DL guys that fit the system. Holiday can play DE, but he's not an ideal fit nor is that the best use of his skills. Roth cannot play DE. So really, only Ferguson and Starks were really our DL. I think we panicked a little bit and overdrafted DL so highly simply because we didn't have any.
