'B'

Needs: B+
Value: B-

Summary: This was a really quiet draft class in terms of star appeal, but the Dolphins did a pretty solid job of hitting their biggest needs. Ja'Wuan James isn't a player many people know, but I thought he'd land here, and he did in a move that makes a lot of sense. The Dolphins need an immediate starter at right tackle, and that's James. Just plug him in and check it off. Jarvis Landry doesn't fill a major need at WR, but he's a really reliable target who catches absolutely everything. Billy Turner was a tackle at North Dakota State, but could fill another pretty big need they have at guard. Walt Aikens will need some time as he makes a big leap in competition, but is a needed addition at cornerback. Jordie Tripp could offer help at linebacker as a guy who is explosive out of his drop and will play with passion. Matt Hazel is a sleeper at WR, and like Landry, has good hands. This draft was about Ryan Tannehill. Stop the constant sacks, give him a chance to take another step. I think Miami succeeded.

If anyone is interested he gave the Jills a C-, the Patsys a C, and the Jests a B as well.

It is interesting to note the difference between this year and last, where we splurged on going for a star playmaker. Dion Jordan could still be a big contributor but we got very little immediate output from the 2013 class. Noticeable difference is that Hickey selected some guys, eg James, Landry who will likely be used immediately - even down to Tripp in the 5th round, who will probably play on Special Teams replacing Trusnik or Spitler from the get go. We also now have a solid blocking TE in Lynch. It will be interesting to see if Turner is moved to Guard or he is allowed to develop as a Tackle. My guess is he's more of a development prospect.

Finally somebody honest about the Pats. Their draft was awful and the media i saw on them was fawning over them drafting "Brady's replacement." Ummmm, wasn't that the same thing said about Mallett before?

A grade of a B is fair and spot on. Not sexy, not pretty, but filled our holes with people that can be trusted by the people around them.

Anybody who watched the Fins last year knew the number one problem with this team was the overall lack of depth . . . and it ended up biting us in the ass on the oline, WR, CB and LB.

Hickey did a good job of getting guys that can make this team and provide an impact . . . even if it's from a secondary role. This Lazor offense will require good pass catchers and a good offensive line, and Hickey goes out and drafts 2 WRs, a TE and 2 OL with 5 of the 8 picks. He understands the concept of creating competition and weeding out the best starters AND the best backups for this team . . . unlike Jeff Ireland who for the most part considered a position like WR a novelty item that you can address in round 7 or in UDFA.

This was not a one year fix, but I'm loving the foundation that we have started with this draft.

I don't care what they say this draft was mismanaged. These guys may turn out great, but the fact he overvalued picks by not trading down or trading up when needed also cost us more depth. Underwhelming

watching the Senior bowl and noticing Tripp, Lynch, Turner.

Tripp made a special teams coverage play. sticks his nose in nice. Coverage type LB. bounces on balls of feet pre-snap zach like read on play to jump start. Enthusiastic guy.

Lynch made some nice blocks, missed on others but play was away from him. I like the upside of him. nice size. true TE in big program. He drew the coverage on TE crossing routes so Gilmore could be wide open.

Seeing Turner as solid as Tackle but more upside in at G. I still need to see more of him to get a true feel.

Hazel is another iron in the fire for the 2-3 year plan and Fede is Kacy Rogers project with nice prototypical skills/size.

Coming from Mel Kiper this is strong endorsement. I believe the biggest gripe people have is that we didn't draft for value. However, it seems we will get 3-4 starters with this draft which is a huge difference from the "stars" from last year. Hopefully, last years draftees will step up and together with this year help take the team over the hump.

This is what Im expecting. Given the nature of Ireland's picks to take a year or two to develop as well as many of them from last year coming off injury i expect last years crop to be ready to play. This years crop looks solid and ready to play too. We all should be expecting solid contributions from a lot of these guys.

too much made about "small school" guys IMO. Most late rounders get cut or picked up off PS by other teams so I think we were looking for guys coaches knew wouldnt have a pedigree that other teams would jump on when we do put them on PS. Hazel might be an exception.

at first I saw Tripp as Spitler but after watching Senior bowl I see bigger upside all around. Will have good chance to be back up ILB.

mel kiper liking your draft is not a good thing

Mel kills it when he says this draft was about Ryan Tannehill. He is dead dead dead on.

It really was. 2 OL, a blocking TE, and 2 perfect fit WRs for the system . . . plus Albert and Moreno. They fully believe in Ryan and understand that if this team is not going to succeed, it's not going to be because they set their young franchise QB up to fail by not giving enough support around him.

Rating the draft is about as useless as the million mock drafts we've seen over the past few months
Lets rate the drafts after we see how these player actually perform
