I posted this on the other site:

First of all Happy New Year to all.

I want to discuss the chances of receiving more draft picks.
The opportunities will be there for us to do damage in the 08 Draft. Besides the Phins' current 7 picks, there's a great chance more picks are coming by way of trades and Compensatory picks.

When I say trades I'm talking about Round One pick #1 and Round 3 pick #1 this April. These two spots will be the most important as well as most rewarding on Day 1 & 2 respectively. While it's easier said than done, I still see us moving down because someone, GM, owner will get that itch in the first thus resulting in more premium draft picks.

As far as the RD Three pick #1 goes, remember the format changed to only two rounds on Day one. Meaning, that coveted first pick on Day 2 is no longer in RD four. Higher ranked players will be available and I predict Parcells' phone will be ringing off the hook. A brief recap:

Back in 1996 the stinkin jets had the first pick in RD 4 and traded it to TB

1997 - Parcells traded it to ne

1999 - CLE traded it to SF who then traded it to IND.

2001 - SD traded it to ne

2005 - SF to PHI

2006 - (second pick in RD Four) NO to PHI

2007 - (second pick in RD Four) from DET thru BAL to JAC

We should be in the running for at least two Comp picks because of the obvious - losing more FAs than signed, but also:

"As part of the CBA there must be a minimum of 255 players picked at each draft. If the total number of regular plus compensatory picks is less than 255 additional compensatory picks will be awarded to the teams with the highest picks in the first round starting with the team with the very first selection until the 255 number is reached."
- Great Blue North Draft Report

So 32 teams w/ 7 picks amounts to 224 selections. Minus the Chargers & Ravens' supp picks as well as the Taintriots 1st rounder that's 221 total. The NFL dished out 32 Comp picks in each of the last five drafts. I would not frown upon a 6th nor a 7th rounder. That's more opportunities to find hidden gems.

I just hope Parcells & Co have the right attitude and not view them as you know, throwaway selections, "we had a successful early rds draft so these picks don't matter" kind of thinking.

Going into the 07 Draft the consensus was it would be the Phins' most important.
Not anymore.

Compensatory draft picks?

We cut a bunch of players last offseason. Do we get any extra picks this year?

Comp picks are based on free agents we lose, not people we cut before their contracts are up.

Itsdahumidity has a great point and I commend him on it because I didn't realize it. So basically, the Dolphins will have AT LEAST one compensatory pick given to them just because of the fact that the Patriots, Chargers and Ravens are missing draft picks. That's pretty cool. I suppose it would be asking too much to suppose that Randy Mueller had successfully rigged our 2007 free agency such to where we would be getting a compensatory pick or two. Unfortunately I doubt he was competent enough to figure out the system for awarding the picks.

It's all smoke and mirrors anyway, based upon the arbitrary and ever-changing machinations of the NFL peoples. There are surgeons and physicists on FH and they can't even figure it out

It is actually a very rigid but very secretive system. Some people have it down exceptionally, among them Scott Pioli. There's another guy on the internet that is able to predict compensatory selections with like 90 to 95% accuracy, too.

Well, just dont see who we lost in FA vs. the value we signed in FA for 2007 to justify a Comp pick in 2008 draft.

I understand the 255 necessary, but not sure how Miami gets one in 2008. Even with 34 available (221 less Pats 1st, SD & Ravens supplemental usage), I wouldnt be surprised if Miami misses out.

Honestly I would love one this year.

When does this individual put out his predictions? Any word if Miami is predicted to receive one?

sammy morris was doing well , McIntosh was a starter a KC, Gus Frerrotte was backup and won a game... couple players here and there that contributed to teams and i believe with the 34 picks to handoff that we will easily receive a 4th or two low rounders (6th, 7th) ... only a gut feeling..

Perhaps the NFL con tiki gods will take pity on the Dolphins and grant us a early selection as compensatory pick...maybe a 4th for playing on that rice paddy in Pittsburgh as well as a 7th for allowing our ST unit to go to New England....

When are they awarded BTW?

In addition to the 32 picks in each round, there are a total of up to 32 picks dispersed at the ends of Rounds 3 through 7. These picks, known as "compensatory picks," are awarded to teams that have lost more qualifying free agents than they gained the previous year in free agency. Teams that gain and lose the same number of players but lose higher-valued players than they gain also can be awarded a pick, but only in the seventh round, after the other compensatory picks. Compensatory picks cannot be traded, and the placement of the picks is determined by a proprietary formula based on the player's salary, playing time and postseason honors with his new team, with salary being the primary factor. So, for example, a team that lost a linebacker who signed for $2.5 million per year in free agency might get a sixth-round compensatory pick, while a team that lost a wide receiver who signed for $5 million per year might receive a fourth-round pick.
If fewer than 32 such picks are awarded, the remaining picks are awarded in the order in which teams would pick in a hypothetical eighth round of the draft.

We added Porter, think he cancels out Sammy, Mac, or any other FA.

PIT cut Porter & Gus left in '06 offseason.

Right we signed JP as UFA, and correct on Gus, only took his list from above.

Still not sure how this all shakes out to equal we get a Compensatory Pick but will be thrilled with fingers crossed.

Here's one thing I want to know; when does the NFL announce the allocation of the picks?

No one has aked it yet, so i thought i would throw it out there.
