First of all Happy New Year to all.
I want to discuss the chances of receiving more draft picks.
The opportunities will be there for us to do damage in the 08 Draft. Besides the Phins' current 7 picks, there's a great chance more picks are coming by way of trades and Compensatory picks.
When I say trades I'm talking about Round One pick #1 and Round 3 pick #1 this April. These two spots will be the most important as well as most rewarding on Day 1 & 2 respectively. While it's easier said than done, I still see us moving down because someone, GM, owner will get that itch in the first thus resulting in more premium draft picks.
As far as the RD Three pick #1 goes, remember the format changed to only two rounds on Day one. Meaning, that coveted first pick on Day 2 is no longer in RD four. Higher ranked players will be available and I predict Parcells' phone will be ringing off the hook. A brief recap:
Back in 1996 the stinkin jets had the first pick in RD 4 and traded it to TB
1997 - Parcells traded it to ne
1999 - CLE traded it to SF who then traded it to IND.
2001 - SD traded it to ne
2005 - SF to PHI
2006 - (second pick in RD Four) NO to PHI
2007 - (second pick in RD Four) from DET thru BAL to JAC

We should be in the running for at least two Comp picks because of the obvious - losing more FAs than signed, but also:
"As part of the CBA there must be a minimum of 255 players picked at each draft. If the total number of regular plus compensatory picks is less than 255 additional compensatory picks will be awarded to the teams with the highest picks in the first round starting with the team with the very first selection until the 255 number is reached."
- Great Blue North Draft Report
So 32 teams w/ 7 picks amounts to 224 selections. Minus the Chargers & Ravens' supp picks as well as the Taintriots 1st rounder that's 221 total. The NFL dished out 32 Comp picks in each of the last five drafts. I would not frown upon a 6th nor a 7th rounder. That's more opportunities to find hidden gems.
I just hope Parcells & Co have the right attitude and not view them as you know, throwaway selections, "we had a successful early rds draft so these picks don't matter" kind of thinking.
Going into the 07 Draft the consensus was it would be the Phins' most important.
Not anymore.
