Merged: A reason for the horrible blocking/Easy to Point the Finger

I'm just surprised Feeley never fumbled the football.

The reason is that they've done a poor job addressing the OL. They haven't drafted quality lineman. And the ones they did draft were major reaches. Taylor Whitley in the 3rd?? Trading a future #2 to move up for Wade Smith?? I know that he wasn't supposed to play last year. But this is 2004. And Smith hasn't shown one bit of improvement. He is easily the worst starting LT in the league.

And how did we get in that situation?? Well, we were outbid on Wayne Gandy and had no backup plan. Our backup plan was to count on Mark Dixon (a converted guard) and trade up for Smith.

All we can say is, "hurry back Damion McIntosh".
You may be right Muck...They may suck socks but, I'm just trying to figure out what happened last night. If it keeps happeneing, I'll swing to your POV eventually. :D

Even the announcers were making fun of our OL!They were showingReplays of our lineman and it showed the RG blocking someone head up and the RT standing behind the RG pushing on him.The annoucers were laughing saying it takes 2 guys to block 1 guy and letting everyone else go free. How many guys do the RB's have to block?

lol....more people rushing than blocking? Isn't that called a blitz? Blitzing happens in every game. Please don't make excuses for the worst offensive line in the NFL. BTW, that was the Bengals D last night that gave up almost 500yds to the Jets.

Wade Smith is not a starting caliber lineman....I think that was pretty clear.

We had holding calls on plays where there were more than 2 defenders in the backfield. How could they have been holding? They can't block or cheat! That's pathetic.

Wannstedt actually thinks we have a better chance of scoring on D. When the head coach of the team has given up on the offense by the 2nd game of the season, do you fire him? I would. This guy has no clue what he's doing.

Did anybody notice the change in AJ's attitude from last week? Poor guy thinks he's gonna get benched after every attempt at an offensive drive. Way to build that confidence you moron.

Did you miss some days in Football 101? Did you miss the game possibly? How about the title of the thread (the first title), did you miss that?

Because you sure as he// whiffed on the point.

three plays stand out in my mind, telling me that this is without a doubt the most horrendous offensive line ive seen in my life, and its not the running backs fault. justin smith ran around wade smith, and wade literally waived at him, and didnt touch him. he nailed feeley untouched for a sack. on another play, wade smith couldnt choose between two guys, so he let them both go, that was the play that the announcers were laughing at him for trying to block a linebacker with one arm. the third was the delayed handoff to gordon where the bengals stacked the right side of the line, and the entire offensive line went left, leaving THREE bengals unaccounted for, and of course gordon was stuffed for a five yard loss.

these guys are an embarrassment, and im glad the randy blasted them late in the game, they deserved it! the big question is a simple one, how did we let it get to this point? wanny has largely ignored the offense during his tenure, and we are now paying the price. easily the worst offensive line ive ever seen in 30 years of watching football. remember, this was a TERRIBLE defense we were playing against. you guys bash espn, and the sportswriters, but clearly they were right, this team is a mess, and it all starts with this o-line
I agree with the NE fan -- worst I've ever seen too. And the point above is a good one -- if you're gonna put an entire team on the shoulders of your RB (Ricky), how can you ignore the offensive line? That's like telling a guy to fix your roof without a ladder. Totally ridiculous.

LG actually had easy decisions to make

Lamar Gordon actually had very simple decisions to make when it came to the blitzes. All he had to do was block 1 of the 3 or 4 guys who ran right through our blue light special of a line...

I didn't miss your point infins. I just think its absolutely absurd to think our poor blocking was a result of Lamar not knowing the offense yet. I watched the game and it was pretty clear to me that our oline can't block worth a lick. I agree that Lewis decided blitzing us gave the Bengals the best chance to win. Whether he came to that decision because of a newly acquired RB or because the whole league knows our line sux is anyones guess. They also blitzed a hella of a lot out of what seemed to be a nickel 3-3 of some sort. They were bringing 3 linemen and 3 linebackers apparently making it even more confusing for our garbage line to pick a guy and get in his way.

ZERO experienced RBs in the backfield.

Meaning, NO ONE to pick up the blitzing "whoever".

Marvin Lewis KNEW that our only back was a player who has been on the team less than 2 weeks. Meaning, if he was going to be worth anything to us in this game we would have had to stuff his head full of plays for him to run and catch and likely wouldn't have had time to teach him ANY of our blitz assignments.

How many times did Cincy come with the blitz last night?

Of course the O-line is going to look bad when the other team sends more rushers than we have blockers.

Just a thought....

DUDE WADE SMITH WASEN'T EVEN TRYING TO BLOCK ANYBODY, WHITELY CAN'T BLOCK ANYBODY, AND MCKINNEY IS JUST ANOTHER JOKE...IF THE LINE CAN'T BLOCK YOU CAN HAVE JIMM BROWN BACK THERE IT WON'T MATTER... THERE HAD BETTER BE A SHAKE UP OR THE PITTSBURGH GAME WILL BE A BIGGER JOKE!!!

We have no timing to run screens. I didnt seen an outside run that didnt result in a holding penalty. Our offense is so scaled back, that Pitt will just blitz us on every down.

It's kind of hard for one RB to block the entire defensive line. That's what was happening last night.
