PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Steelers will begin a coaching search Friday to replace departing coach Bill Cowher, a person familiar with Cowher's status told The Associated Press on Thursday night, speaking on condition of anonymity because the coach's departure had not been officially announced.
Cowher called owner Dan Rooney earlier in the day to tell him of his decision, and the team announced a Friday afternoon news conference.

Alex Marves just reported now on WQAM that the Phins will quietly explore what it would take for Bill Cowher to come here. Ahh... the plot thickens!!!

No picks for a coach please. Plus, if Cowher comes in he will bring high expectations and pressure to win now with him and we saw how that turned out this year.

Cowher should sit the year out. Take a long vacation, relax, get his personal crap together and then come back. Who knows how many jobs would be open next year and he would have his pick. Plus, not having to give the Steelers any compensation would make him a very hot commodity. He could break the bank in his city of choice.

I agree, we haven't had many high draft picks consecutively and we haven't had most if not all of our picks either. Wayne will have to pay or trade a player, no picks!!

Granted, draft picks are important. However, consider the following:

Would you rather have:

1). 1,000,001 draft picks, or
2). A long-tenured, winning coach with a fighting spirit who only had 2 losing seasons in 15 years

You decide

Wait a year for the Chin

Why not promote Dom for a year and bring in Cower after a years rest. Lets face it we can use 07 to rebuild. Trade Zach, Chambers, Mare, Ricky. Draft a stud WR(They rarely produce the first year) Move Crowder to the middle. Then pick up a outside linbacker in the draft and a free agent corner. Bring in a good OC and let them learn the new system. Just a thought Let me have it:D :D

You don't tread water for a year waiting for a coach who may or may not want the job -- it's Wayne's responsibility to find the best coach who really wants to coach here right now and sign him to a contract.

I don't think it would be a good idea to "throw away" a year. There are some good coaches out there. Might as well get started down the recovery road now.

I do believe whoever comes has a pretty decent base to start. Like the Saints, we are just a consistant QB away from good seasons...remember this when we find a good one and go 10-6 next season.

I'm not totally opposed to Cowher -- I'd rather not give up picks or hire a coach who might abandon this team like Johnson or Saban, but he does have talent. I really do worry about how much Cowher's heart would be in it versus his bank account.

I'll take option 2. Bring me the Chin!!

#1. With that many picks you'll find enough playmakers that Capers could win with.

I'm not against Cowher, I'm against losing another high pick again.

Do you tell Capers that he's only going to be the head coach for a year? Are you certain that we can get Cowher? If not then what? Trade Zach for what? A 4th or 5th rounder? Trade Chambers and really be left with the slowest receiving core in the NFL. Why not add a speedster to team with him? Are you forgetting Crowder already plays inside when we are in the 3-4. Also Cowher and Capers are 3-4 guys so you need two ILBs.

There seriously is no HC in the NFL right now that I have more respect for than Cowher.

I question what he has left to prove or strive for, though.
