MERGED: An article about the dolphins espn

This might explain why the Dolphins chose Vontae Davis instead of Darius Butler with the first pick.
"We like big corners," Sparano said. "In fact, we'll take smaller corners in some situations off the [draft] board, and they might just be good players for other people, just maybe not for us."

Blurb On Dolphins CB size

Small Tim Graham report dicussing the size of WR's in the AFC East and the upgrade to size in CB's in the division to counter it.
Graham seems to get a lot of flak on these boards but overall I think he is a pretty darn good analyst of the AFC East. He also seems to give the Dolphins credit where it is due.

Heres the blurb, and the link. Nothing Earth-shattering, or that we haven't heard before, but a nice write up none the less.

The Dolphins were concerned with their size at cornerback even before the Bills welcomed Owens to the AFC East.
The Dolphins sometimes felt overmatched last year against a series of big receivers: Moss, Larry Fitzgerald, Andre Johnson, Brandon Marshall and Dwayne Bowe.
Miami kept Marshall and Bowe in check, but surrendered 153 yards to Fitzgerald, 178 yards to Johnson and 125 yards and three touchdowns to Moss.
"You better have some big, strong people that can compete against these guys," Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano said, "because they're big, strong, physical receivers that can take over a game in those situations. I think that you need to be prepared when you're playing against them."
Miami's starting cornerbacks last year were Will Allen and Andre' Goodman. Both are listed at 5 foot 10, an inch below the league average for an NFL starter.

Goodman departed via free agency. The Dolphins signed Eric Green, a 5-foot-11 former Arizona Cardinal, and selected two more corners early in the draft. They chose Vontae Davis (5 foot 11) of Illinois in the first round and Sean Smith (6 foot 4) of Utah in the second round.
"We like big corners," Sparano said. "In fact, we'll take smaller corners in some situations off the [draft] board, and they might just be good players for other people, just maybe not for us."
Smith is a sequoia corner at 6-4. He received first-team reps at right corner during organized team activities.
"It definitely makes it more difficult for receivers to catch the ball and ball placement for quarterbacks," Smith said. "With my reach and size, you definitely have to keep the ball away from me. With that in my mind, my size helps me out a lot."

All this talk about size. Beyond size, I think we drafted 2 excellent corners regardless of how tall they are.

Speaking from personal experience, I hated long, tall corners. I found them in the way more. It was difficult to shield them off with my body.....I found that small fast corners you could still be productive against them because of that.

Small fast corners I could always once a head of them cut them off and keep them on my back where I felt I desperatly needed seperation from the bigger corners.

just my two cents on it....for what it's worth.

where did you play lappy? college, Highschool, pros? jusy wondering?

I absolutely love the fact that Sean Smith is 6-4. I would love to watch him go for an entire game covering Randy Moss just to see how Moss would react to being covered by someone his size.

highschool, college, no interest for a 6' 185lb slot receiver in the CFL.......even one that ran 4.5 forty!! If you can believe it. :D

Down the road, Smith and Davis should give us a lot of versatility, mixing up zone and man coverages. Smith especially - with his length - should eat up a lot of space. Of course, Smith - at this point - is primarily a man CB, so it might take some time for him to adjust.

I still say I love our draft. Not sure of the White pick, but love our CB's and Turner.

I think the young talent has so much learn.

Corners more than any other position can rely on athletic ability so much in highschool and even in college. In the pro's that ability will only take them so far. Then a high level of understanding and performing fundamentals comes into play.

At the corner position if those fundamentals are rock solid, then you add your athletic abilities in you can be very good.

The young guys need to learn and understand for maybe even the first time how important their gate is. Who's supposed to open that gate and when it should open.

The biggest mistake a corner can make is opening his gate too early. Or heaven for bid open it the wrong way.

It's the fundamentals that will make them players in this league, not size, speed or strength.....they have all that already.

Smith especially seems to be a great student of the game. All young players have a lot to learn, but I believe he has the makeup to learn at a good clip. I think our young corners will be solid by the end of year one. Next year, though, I think they'll really shine.

I dont know why but Smith sounds like he's a student of the game. He speaks very well and has alot of confidence in his ability. I cant decide which jersey to get. My favorite number is 24 but I think Smith is gonna end up being a better player for us

Both sean smith and v davis were good man corners in college and with will allen who is a also a great man corner that could be telling you something about what sporano wants to do with them. I mean when you go against t.o. we could have smith line up with him because of his height and when you gotta a burner like lee evans you could have davis or smith lineup with him because of there speed, we really got some power at corner but we have to see how the rooks play out
