Merged: Another swipe at the fans, is it really this bad?

Is it bitter or the truth, based on the responses here, there seems to be a lot of truth in what he's saying.. I know I've seen that stadium sold out for years, and now I see a lot of seats empty while watching on TV, it's gotten the point, I actually look for that when a game is played in Miami...
Not denying the problem here, but it seems like the guy takes a swipe at Miami any chance he gets..considering miami gave him not only a 2nd shot but a 3rd shot at reviving his football career its pretty ****ty of him

Omar brought up an interesting, maybe true point....that the Dolphins may have as many fans in other places than in Miami. Watch the game against SD in 2 weeks. There's also a bunch that will be at the Jets/Giants games, just listen and look when Miami scores during those games (I know Dolfans NYC has about 60 or so tickets for the upper deck). And remember the Bills game in Toronto? I'm pretty sure there were an equal number of Dolphins fans.

I've said Ross probably has his own plane...he should use it as a way for out-of-Miami dolphins fans to fly down for free if they buy tickets! (they have that bus!) I would get tickets if I could have free travel.

But if they start winning again, Miami fans will show. Pretty sure the Texans game is going to be blacked out. Texans don't have too large a fanbase outside Houston, and casual Dolphins fans aren't buying the remaining tickets.

Let's be realistic here...the real reason the Dolphins have lost their home field advantage is because of the product they have been putting on the field the last decade and a half. We haven't had a consistant winner in Miami since Don Shula was coaching and they had no problem selling out the joint with the Dolphin faithful. Jimmy Johnson, Dave Wannstedt and Tony Sparano all had limited success. We cannot even mention Cam clueless and his futility sent this organization in a freefall. The only way to get the fans back is to consistantly win every year and put a team on the field that makes the play offs every season. I bet you wont see as many Jets, Patriots and Bills fans making plans to come down to south Florida and spend their hard earned money to watch their team get their butts kicked in on Sunday. Now it's more like a holiday getaway for them...not only do they enjoy the great weather...they enjoy watching their team whoop up the the Dolphins.
This has got to change...it has to start by the Dolphins protecting their house and if Tony Sparano cannot deliver, then it's time for a new head coach.
Here are a few names for Ross to consider...

Jon Gruden
Jim Tressel
Bill Cowher
Jeff Fisher

Ricky is 100% correct. He's not bashing the fanbase by saying that. Like many others have said this town is 80% transplants. The Fins' national fanbase is excellent, but locally they can't even compete with rival fans. It is what it is.

Reasons:
5) Just as the players hate to hear cheers for the opposing team, I CAN'T STAND sitting near them (or tailgating next to them). Most of the time it ends up in an argument (unless I bring my kids with me, then I grin and bear it.) I end up going anyway, lol.

.

Honestly I have never had a problem tailgating with Rats or Jets fans at Sunlife. My experiences with them have actually been pretty good. They have always been cool to tailgate with.

We're basically a hospitality industry/service economy down here that largely and ironically depends on the tourist trade..... not too many major corporations headquartered here to snatch up large blocks of season tickets as employee and customer perks, -the expense of which they end up writing off anyway. That's a disadvantage. Few regions in the country are as desirable to live, due to climate and friendly tax structure as SoFLorida. Consequently it's inevitable that a large contingent of "fans" will be rooting for the opposing team they grew up with. Beyond that, because of the great winter weather here, scheduling SoBe, The Everglades, Sanibel/Captiva, The Keys, Disney and Universal around their team's Sunday visit to Sun Life makes it a perfect way to thaw out.

This is a snippet from last Bureau of Labor Statistics Employment Report (8.19.11) As you can discern economics play a considerable role.

The largest over-the-month decrease in employment occurred in Illinois
(-24,900), followed by Florida (-22,100), Minnesota (-19,800), and Indiana (-10,100).

Can this lack of hometeam advantage be fixed? I don't think so, so long as the location is desirable and temperate South Florida. However, it can be lessened and maybe even minimized with a record of winning and expectation that the team will be in every game. Losing as many home games as we have, it would be naive to think most fans don't have a breaking point when it comes to be gluttons for punishment. Personally, I hate the stop and go, inch forward, avoid merging cars routine out of the parking lot and onto the Turnpike North after a demoralizing loss like that stolen Pittsburgh game last year. All you want to do is get as far the **** away from N.Miami as soon as possible.

Finally, you can tell from the board itself, that there's been a steady exodus of So Floridians to parts north like TN GA and the Carolinas which may offer a less complicated and safer life style. Our core fans are moving away and largely being replaced by soccer fans. I enjoy the diversity of SoFlorida.. but from a football standpoint, it resonates less and less. Personally, I'd be for relocating the stadium somewhere on the edge of the Everglades between the Sawgrass Mills Mall and N. Coral Springs to facilitate easier accessibility for our fans as far north as Port St Lucie, and of course Martin and Palm Beach Counties as well as Florida's southwest coast cites such as Naples and Fort Meyers. I believe that would help, but it's not gonna happen.

I agree with you on the tailgating point. Most of the problems I've witnessed or been a party to have taken place inside the stadium.

Maybe the tailgaters are worried about their cars? ROFL

Hmmm, been saying that for a long time now. There are some that still refuse to acknowledge that there is a problem with the local fan base.

well, what do you suggest stephen ross does? do u want him to move the team? lol

Though I'm hopeful with the Marlins departing, Stephen Ross will do something for the stadium that will increase its effectiveness and make it more football friendly . . . that stadium can get loud. 2008, New England came down here and Dolphin fans had that joint PACKED. I have never heard it so loud in a stadium.

Winning cures alot of problems . . . that place was loud as hell in this game . . . and it was DOLPHINS fans. Notice this is where the "ain't got it like that" fans sit . . . they tend to be the biggest supporters and do their best to make it to a few games despite their problems. Don't tell me Miami ain't got good fans (not u obviously, just in general).

I was at that game and i can attest to that being the loudest crowd i have ever seen at Joe Robbie. Me and a few friends went there with no tickets expecting to be able to get them at the gate or from a scalper. Kind of a spur of the moment decision that day. When we got there we nearly shat. You could barely move outside the stadium and all you could see were people ASKING for tickets. No sellers. We searched for ages and ended up buying from two different people and sitting separately after we thought for sure we were never gonna get in. Ended up paying like $25 over face value. it was crazy. And the stadium was rocking too. Crowder got ejected I believe after a scrap with a Pats lineman and the crowd went crazy for him.

oh i agree. listen winning fixes alot. im just pointing out some things that would help. and there truthfully are some stadium deficiencies. but thats the last thing that matters. they have to get the "how to win games" part down first. and it starts with your approach to the game. fundamentally how u approach winning and structuring an organization. it starts there. the stadium is the last thing. but it really would help alot and go a long way i believe by simply moving in the seats and making it a little tighter environment - bring the fans into the game a little bit

Forgive me if I am wrong, but wasnt the last time he was suspended for smoking in 2006? 5 years ago..
Tell Ricky when he quits being suspended bc of smoking dope and then quitting his team to smoke he can talk about Fans.... We supported his dumb *** for years when the rest of the NFL laughed at him.

I didn't read through this thread, but are people still making excuses for the poor fan support?

There are very few teams of any sport who has a fan base that will support them finacially (going to games) when the product on the field sucks.

Considering it's taken 10 years of mediocrity to finally produce blackouts, I'd say that pretty good.

As for transplants being in the stadium... well that would change too if we won more. More wins would have more bandwagonners and more people buying tickets.

This is Miami after all. People aren't rushing to move to Baltimore.

Miami may have the most fair-weather and fickle fans... but winning... winning solves a lot of problems.

Hopefully Ross realizes the only way to get good returns on his investment.. is to win, and win consistently.

the reason why we have so many different fans down here is a positive, think about it. how many people are moving to cities like baltimore or pittsburgh? these are old citiies whose economies have been in the toilet for decades. florida has had a history in the last half of a century of having a booming economy. the fact that these people need to move down here because their crappy cities have become so dilapitated is a testimate we have to our lifestyle.
