Report: Bills contact Mike Shanahan

Posted by Michael David Smith on November 18, 2009 3:35 PM ET
The Buffalo Bills have named defensive coordinator Perry Fewell the interim replacement for fired head coach Dick Jauron. But they might be looking for a long-term replacement who will make a big splash.

Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that the Bills have contacted Mike Shanahan to gauge Shanahan's interest in becoming their next head coach.

ESPN also reports that the process is underway of arranging a meeting between Shanahan and the Bills.

I can't see him going to Buffalo and if he does I wouldn't care unless he was brining John Elway and terrell davis w/ him(the prime versions). Shanahan has done nothing w/o those 2.

One day after firing Dick Jauron, the Buffalo Bills have wasted no time identifying a potential replacement.

Buffalo has contacted and is in the process of arranging a meeting with former Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan, according to two NFL sources.

Let's be honest, Ralph Wilson is one of the cheapest owners in the NFL. To get Shanahan to come to Buffalo he is going to have to give him complete control of the team and a HUGE salary. On top of that he is going to be paying Dick Jauron $6 million over the next two years.

I would be absolutely SHOCKED if Ralph actually spent that much to change coaches. He didn't want to pay a new coach earlier this year so he kept Dick, so why would he change now?

Jauron makes more than your head coach.

Jauron makes more than your head coach.
Actually if you want to be technical, Jauron when originally hired by the Bills was making $1.5 million per year. That was his ORIGINAL contract, and he was given a three year extension by Ralph last year. The EXTENSION bumped his pay to $3 million per year.

When Sparano was hired his deal was worth $2.7 million per year, which was the norm at that time frame for what a first time head coach would make. When Sparano gets his contract extension, he is going to get a pay raise like Jauron.

So, I am not really sure what you are getting at.

The fact is, Wilson is more likely to give a $3 million per year contract to someone like Trestman, then he is giving a $7-10 million per year contract to someone like Shanahan. On top of that salary, he needs to pay Jauron $6 million.

Ralph is cheap.

H is by far the best offensive mind in football. He could plug any rb into his system and get 1,000 yards. Look at Brian Griese, Elway, Plummer, & Cutler's numbers with MS and without. They all had far and awy the best seasons of their career under him. You can't deny he is an offensive genius.

That said, he got into trouble because he was the GM and couldn't evaluate defense. But even the mention of the Bills trying to meet with him gives me wood. :hi5:

Shanny would be out of his mind to go to Buffalo. Terrell Owens is a nightmare to deal with, and that franchise is just destined to fail.

By the way i'm with junc, even if he does go to Buffalo who cares. He's done nothing significant since 1998.

That was more a product of the OL coach and his dirty tactics but is the game about producing 1,000 yd rushers or winning? The man has ONE postseason win w/o Elway and Davis.

IMO if you get a REAL Gm and Shanahan, it's a good move....but it's not going to be a fun process...I can't really see to many coaches that will want to take over a team that is such an offensive mess.
