Merged: Brian Schottenhiemer to be interviewed

I wonder at what point these interviews stopped being about getting a coach and at what point they became about what needs to be done to fix this team. I'd be stunned if Schottenheimer got this job, but I'd love to be able to pick his brain about what's wrong with this team if I had a chance.

I agree, but why would the Jets OC help us get our team fixed. I am confused. Fill me in JJ.

best offensive coordinating job of 2006 in my book. Him and Capers would be a deadly combination as coordiantors. unfortunately he's probably not ready for prime time as a acoach

Yah, I did like how they used Cotchery, and their running back by committee.

I like what he does as an offensive coordinator. I like his father as a head coach. Wish the Dolphins had hired him instead of Mularkey. But since Saban insisted on keeping the Linehan system, which I didn't have an issue with at the time, Brian Schottenheimer wouldn't have been Brian Schottenheimer in Miami.

I especially like this little nugget:

Schottenheimer, the son of Chargers head coach Marty Schottenheimer, ran an innovative no-huddle offense that included an array of personnel packages, formations, motions and shifts. He played to the strengths of his players and found ways to incorporate nearly all of his skill players in the offense. His personnel packages kept opposing defenses off-balance and his different formations, motions and shifts forced opponents to make pre-snap adjustments that kept them on their heels. Schottenheimer's game plans were creative and ever-changing and seemed to include a new wrinkle each week. They attacked the weaknesses of the defense rather than simply playing to the Jets' strength.

But, I have to stick to my guns and insist that we all "Just Say No to Offensive Coordinators as Head Coaches."

Nice find FinFan, I enjoyed the read.

That's part of the game. He has to balance what he says in an effort to interview well with what he holds back to keep an advantage for himself. Word of his performance will get around to the whole league and could have a huge impact on whether he gets his shot in 2009, 2013, or not at all.

It seems to me like Wayne and company are interviewing too many people and they really do not know what they are looking for. They should have narrowed it down a bit. I mean damn what does this make it 11 potential candidates in 6 days. Did they not like any of the prior guys enough to give an offer or are they just waiting for someone whose team is still in contention? I am going nuts over all this. Hopefully we walk away with Cam.

Thanks for clarifying, I just wasn't sure what you meant. I need to stop drinkin rum and cokes.

Yes, Cam or Ken.

I agree 100%. At the very least the side benefit, though perhaps not intentional, is that Huizenga interviewing him raises his profile and our AFC East rival's smart young offensive head coach gets a shot sooner rather than later. It seemed to help when Saban, Belichick, and Crennel were all vying for the services of a then unheard of Eric Mangini after the '04 season.

Jimmy, it's funny you mention this because I had completely forgotten about this technique. Wayne used it in 2004 when they had the sham "general manager search" and interviewed different prospective GMs and asked them how they'd fix the problems in Miami and then promoted Spielman from within. I sure hope it works out A LOT better this time.

The one thing I would say in Brian's defense is if we somehow signed him (never happen) I believe our offensive woes would be fixed within two years. This guy was at the cutting edge of innovative playcalling. Living in New York I got to watch them every week and I'll tell you the difference between a Schottenheimer offense and a Mularkey or Linehan offense is night and day. This guy is probably the brightest young offensive mind in the game

There are several potential reasons for all the interviews. I'm not sure what's going on, but it could be one or more of these things:

1) They're trying to figure out what's wrong with the team, so they're talking to as many people as possible. This would tend to explain the wide variation in interviews from college coaches to veteran coaches to young turks.

2) They know who they want, but they don't want to give any of the teams they're competing with an edge by developing a tell. Keeping up the interviews keeps the Bidwells, Al Davis, and whoever else there is wondering what Wayne is thinking.

3) If they have a candidate they're courting, they may think interviews will soften his position to make for easier negotiations.

4) Wayne may be trying to keep fan response positive while delaying until Cameron (or Rivera) is available. This works well in combination with #2.

5) Wayne may really just have no clue. He had no decision to make when he went with Johnson -- he had that pretty much lined up. He had no decision to make when he went with Wanny -- Jimmy made the call for him. He had months to prepare for Wanny leaving. This hit him by surprise.
