Charles Clay - TE - Dolphins

The Denver Post's Mike Klis expects the Broncos to have some interest in free agent Charles Clay.

Julius Thomas is expected to walk in free agency and leave the Broncos for a big-money deal. He's likely looking for $8 million-plus annually, while Clay should slot in around the $6 million range. Clay seems like the better fit for coach Gary Kubiak's offense as a finesse player who can line up at multiple spots.

Denver Post: Broncos to target Charles Clay?

Among the free agents the Broncos might pursue next week are Kansas City center Rodney Hudson, Miami tight end Charles Clay and Baltimore defensive end Pernell McPhee.

Far more recognizable names, at least in Denver households, are expected to leave Dove Valley. Broncos tight end Julius Thomas, safety Rahim Moore, left guard Orlando Franklin and Knighton are all expected to command huge contracts and sign elsewhere as free agents.

The Broncos can't meet those players' asking prices while also seeking to redistribute the balance of their roster. A few players favored by coaches John Fox, Jack Del Rio and Adam Gase might not fit quite as well for Gary Kubiak, Wade Phillips and Rick Dennison.

Specifically, a new type of blocker is needed on offense. The Broncos have four needs up front: left guard, center, right tackle and tight end.

The draft might fill one need. Incumbents might fill another. Free agency will fill two, maybe three.

While right tackle might be the Broncos' No. 1 need, their 2015 starter might come from their No. 28 draft pick. Or that No. 1 pick might be a tight end if the Broncos can't nab Clay, Owen Daniels or Jordan Cameron from free agency to replace Julius Thomas.

Thomas is said to want a contract in the $8 million range, while Clay is asking for about $2 million less.

This appears to be speculation on Klis' part but a) he's a good reporter, and b) it makes sense. I've been saying for years that the player who Charles Clay most resembles is Owen Daniels, who gave many fine years of service to Kubiak's Texans.

I wonder whether the extra $2 million is worth it to make a swap of the two players. Thomas is bigger, faster and more of a red zone threat. But... he's also been injury prone (though I'm worried Clay's right knee is going to be a chronic problem), wants more money and he had Peyton Manning throwing him the ball, which is always going to make you look better than you are.

Fine. The Dolphins will take Julius Thomas. Thomas would be a nice upgrade. I don't believe it will happen though. I expect Clay to stay in Miami.

I am not sure Thomas is that much of an upgrade to Clay. Rather keep Clay at 6 Mil.

Why would Clay leave if the offers were similar?
Manning is done and the Broncos are almost in full rebuild mode.
The Fins are not far below the Broncos and their needle is pointing up.

Julius Thomas isn't looking for something in the $8 million range...he already turned that down from the Broncos. He wants something in the $10 million range.

hell if jarvis landry catches that ball instead of tipping it up, we beat those suckers on their field in Dec.

I also do not see this happening. He'll remain a Dolphin.
