MERGED: Dion Jordan suspended 4 games

I had such high hopes for Dion.

I still have, even with this suspension, high hopes for Jordan. That hope has not diminished. I just hate the set-back.

QUESTIONS: Do you guys feel that Jordan made an innocent (stupid) mistake, or was he being sneaky and taking the substance thinking that he would never get caught?

get suspended 4 games for taking "stimulants", get suspended 2 games for beating your gf (ray rice). NFL logic.

Well, one is cheating (breaking NFL rules in order to gain some advantage), the other is bad behavior outside of the game. In general, I would expect the NFL to take the first issue more seriously (because it involves breaking its own rules) than the second one. But then again, if Don Jones can be suspended for a tweet, what do I know? By that logic, Ray Rice should probably be suspended for the rest of his life. :idk:

2 games is totally unacceptable. I'd love to hear their logic for that.

What's Goodell's logic for anything? He is an asshat's asshat.

By the way, I'm not sure how many people are aware that Goodell is a Baltimore sports fan going way back. His father was a senator and he grew up rooting for the Colts.

Didn't know that but I know his father Charles was both a NY US senator and Representative who ascended to both positions due to deaths of the incumbents...so you can take that for what it's worth. Also know that he was jets intern.

Beyond that, it's ponderous how possibly an honest mistake meets with an inflexible 4 game suspension but misogynistic thuggery, knocking a woman out and dragging her unconscious body out of an elevator in front of casino cameras for everyone to see only merited a 2 game suspension. Roger doesn't want to hear of any extenuation circumstances for Jordan, but he met with Rice and merrily accepted the BS he shoveled. Too bad Goodell couldn't get rid of that tape the way he did Belicheat's..

The sad truth in this case is that I don't think the average football fan -- who is male, obviously -- places as big a negative value on violence against women as they do on cheating. Nobody likes a cheater, but we all have annoying girlfriends or wives and hey, you know... things happen. That's how a lot of football fans think. Not all, obviously. But a lot.

I mean, the only reason the NFL punishes anybody for anything is because the fans demand it. It helps nobody's bottom line if Dion Jordan doesn't play and really doesn't help anybody's bottom line if Ray Rice doesn't play. If people put up more of a fuss about wife beaters or drunk drivers or the like... they'd be punished more. But they don't. So they aren't.

I agree, but frankly there are implications that I'm not sure I like. In considering "conduct detrimental to the league" the NFL is now judge and jury for all sorts of behavior that people may or may not view as "negative". Ray Lewis - 6 illegitmate children, no suspension. Johnny Football rolling bills, no suspension. Hines Ward DUI, no suspension. Don Jones tweets "horrible" -> suspension. I mean, if what this really means is the NFL is just gauging public opinion and ratings to determine who/when/how long to suspend, then no one should complain about a lack of consistency - it's built into the system. There are no rules, the process is subjective and it's based on what the league thinks will hurt/help ratings. End of story.
