Merged: Does Ireland Only See Ginn as a #2 ?

he's not real big. doesn't block the best but decent. decent routes so far. decent hands so far. might be a #1 in a year or so. right now? beck needs better help.

This would be excellent news if the Bungles were willing to part with #85 for our late 2nd round pick

Sorry but I have to disagree. Ginn runs really good routes and has great hands. He caught everything that was thrown to him when the ball was thrown to him.

Unless I missed a few here and there.

I was very pleased from what i saw with his route running and hands. I think with some experience he could be a great number 1, given we have a QB that can get him the ball...

Now Hagan, thats another story, great routes, horrid hands... I see Wilford supplanting him from his starting role... As it stands rght now the depth at WR would look like Ginn, Wilford, and then Hagan as the 3rd.

If Beck could get some better protection, Ginn would be great

no need to apologize, i'm not sensitive.

route-running wise he just wasn't open as much as he should have been. the routes weren't necessarily bad, but they weren't getting him open. with that speed, he should have been open more. especially since he was #2 behing chambers and then booker.

hands wise he was all right also. only saw a drop or two - but again - if you have such great hands then you should have more catches for more yards.

agreed that with more help he will be awesome. but a truly elite WR, like one that would be taken at say the #9 spot, shouldn't need that help to be the man.

It's disheartening to hear that our WR picked #9 is not being looked at as a #1.

That's just a waste, then, and we could have had Pat Willis and Crowder in the middle.

Now, I firmly believe he's a #1, so I'm happy we took him, but I want Ireland to show some respect and calm down.

Don't throw Ginn under the bus...

I just realized this is his way of further motivating Ginn to prove he's a #1.

My bad.

You want Ireland to show him respect? Ginn has not proven himself to be a #1 WR as of yet. Ireland being in the FO, I don't want him to calm down. if he thinks our WR core is lacking a #1. I want him on the phone figuring out if he can get one.

but i do think ginn will eventually be a #1. i saw the potential from him that i didn't see from beck last year. next year we need a big guy with great hands that can catch passes over the middle and block like his life depended on it - just to limit the amount of excuses people have for beck. that's why - because of the available talent pool at WR - i wouldn't freak if we picked up keyshawn for a season. let beck and ginn develop, not gonna cost a bunch of money, and if he is a shadow of his former self - so what! for a year or 2, keyshawn would be ideal for us in miami.

I saw Ginn open plenty of times last year the problem was the qb's didnt have time to get him the ball. He had very good hands and pretty much caught everything thrown his way.

Just because your drafted in the top 10 doesnt automatically mean you don't need work. I think he is a good route runner right now but with more work can be a great route runner and become an elite receiver, 1 thing that I noticed about ginn that I didnt except when we drafted him was how reliable he was with his hands especially in the middle of the field. For a small guy he isn't afraid to go down the middle and exceeded my expectations as far as a tough receiver goes.

I think Hagan was #3 behind Chambers and Booker. Ginn didnt move into the 3 spot until Chambers was traded.

Granted he needs to get better and should get better because of experience. But in terms of the spot he was taken, I am sure if he was given the starting role from day one he would have had the experience to end the season on a higher note than he did.

In comparison to the rest of the WR draft class (Aside from Dwayne Bowe) he performed fairly well I think. Calvin Johnson, the #2 pick only caught 10 more balls, with 2 more TD's and about 200 more yards and he was on a purely passing team.

Granted you do make vaild points, but you can't put the world on a rookie WR to catch a ton of balls for a buttload of yards. There always has to be some type of learning curve... At every position...

Its just like our Crowder discussion a couple days ago, after a 1-15 season crowder should be given a pass, Ginn should as well (especially being a rookie)

Ginn's the next Steve Smith, bottom line.

dude, forget big shoes to fill - how about some friggin clown shoes to fill. while that would be ideal, that is best case scenario. ginn would have to put some serious bulk on while retaining his speed - pretty tough to do. i'll cross my fingers if you do.

Hopefully we dont waste his potential like we did with Chambers and all the QB inconsistency we gave him

I don't think that's at all a dig at Ginn. I think what he's saying is that if they draft or trade for a guy to play receiver, it's going to be a guy with #1 receiver talent....he's not looking for a slot receiver.

Remember these guys aren't politicians, you can't dissect every statement they make to try and find the hidden meaning.
They spend 18 hours a day watching game film and on the phone with other GM's and player's agents....they're not gifted public speakers or "explainers".
